    Happy Solstice fellow pagans

-40 forecast for tonight, don't think there's going to be much naked pagan dancing around the fire.

Let us all welcome winter and the sun back into the sky.

Sunrise on the ride to work on the shortest day. -32C. At least the bleachers at the rink will be warm in comparison for daughter’s figure skating gala.
Let the 12 days of celebration begin!

This day was quite meaningful when we lived in Alaska, not so much in MT.

I came here to write something like that.

Winter solstice was a pretty big deal when I lived in Fairbanks. Here in NM, not so much. I still write one of my best AK bros every solstice and equinox, even though he lives in CO now. Memories…

Must be nice. Here in Vermont our sunrise gets later until early January. It’ll be mid January until we get back down to todays sunrise time. After that things pick up steam.

We celebrated with a beach fire every solstice in Alaska....everybody was counting down. Of course, Fairbanks it's worse than Juneau in a big way.

I don’t know about that. “Hey, it’s a dry cold!”

Finally, the time between daylight savings and the solstice is rough mentally. Bring on the Sun.

Our days do start getting longer after today but at the end of the day. Sunrise keeps getting later but the increase in sunset time is greater so it’s a net gain. Click image for larger version.

that is very bad. every day now the sun is gaining and will be making it warmer and hotter even if it takes a few months to get going. my favorite day is the summer solstice, then the sun is losing again.

This effect is cool. It's helped me make my peace with late sunrises. Now I toast the later sunset times with my morning coffee. In the dark.

But I get to celebrate almost 2 weeks sooner. Which is nice.

Often this time of year I joke to myself early afternoon " don't worry, it'll be dark soon"

I am looking forward to more sunlight.

I was so focused on missing the missing joke, I missed that you didn't actually say anything about total daylight.

The day is shorter because of cold weather shrinkage.
