Feeling for you Eastern peeps. Exactly why in '16 I said fuk it, I'm skiing out west every winter.

That said, My roots are in the east/adk. Pretty much decided I'm spending Jan-mar w mom next year. It's getting to be time to be around for her. I'll get an Indy, WF local pass etc.

Save some gorilla rain crust and 6 in mid winter base depths for me!

If you can railslide the snowmaking pipes, I think there’s a line that goes.

^ JFC. Worst year ever? '02, '12, '16 were all horrifying.

In the adk in '16, it literally rained to the summits every week in Feb and Mar. That was it for me...

I don’t have good notes on ‘02 (and no memory left) but this year is not as bad as 11/12 or 15/16. At least in SoVT where we’ve had a 25” storm, a 12” storm, a couple 5-6”, and February isn’t over.

The frequency of cutters is just depressing. Pattern show’s potential changes but how that evolves regarding sensible ski weather is a wild card.

Snow stake records confirm that 15/16 was worse, but 11/12 had it's moments.

But we also got that 36” storm late Feb that year. That almost made up for the mtb season in January.

Edit to add I was wrong, that was 2011.

I waited out the windhold, took some laps in the rain, lots of breaks by the fireplace in the lodge, and then come mid afternoon the temps dropped and we got some snow. Amazing what an inch of snow will do for conditions and your attitude.

Went to the loaf, drove up Thursday morning, we’ll before ski report was out. Showed up at 830 to a breezy day and everything on wind hold except skidway. Sat in the lot until whiffletree spun at 1230. Skied everything I could until the bell. Got out early on Friday for a few runs and then got to the top of super quad and lightning at like 940. Honestly to close for comfort. Started down pouring on the ski down. They shut down for about an hour, but the decision had been made by then and we headed out, expecting a shitty ride home. Ride home was actually good. Stopped in Lancaster at the Granite Grind Cafe for a sandwich. We found it on a quick google. Food was awesome. Cheeseburger soup was killer. Grand summit price wasn’t bad for a midweek night and they will give you a parking permit when you show up if you do a pre-check in with them so that’s sweet.

Side note- pretty sure that they have not done any road work on 16 between Rangeley and Errol since I was in highschool 18 years ago up there… that was brutal.

Sounds similar to my 2nd day at the Loaf last April. Made the same decision to leave. Day 1 was a bluebird stunner though. Drove from CowHampshire so I went via I-95.

    No soup pics?

Heading to Rangely on Thursday from SoVT. Wondering if I should take the longer route (I-95) again.

couple more from yesterday, i found some crazy steep woods with cliffs on a skinner. one turn and the snow would sluff off the refrozen surface. more fun than i’d had in awhile. looks like another rollercoaster next week with a storm coming in warm again.

I’ve never done that in the million trips back and forth I’ve done. I always hit 91 to saint j, then truck route down 93 to rt 2, then 2 to 3 north in nh, up to 16 and take 110 that cuts off Berlin and back on to 16. Or I would take 2 all the way to Farmington and then up 16/27 to carrabassett, I’d do that when the weather was shit or the moose were moving. That’s the way I should of gone.

Thanks. Thinking I might hit BMOM in Rumford on the way over so I'll probably just stay on 2. Ski a half day on the Indy Pass so I won't burn a whole day just driving.

They did repave 17 south of Oquossuc last summer. That was freaking rugged prior, especially in the snow.

I heard that it was rather exciting at the top of lift 8 when the lightning rolled through Sunday River, but apparently there were no issues, as everything was back up and running when the half hour clock ran out.

you can take 17 I think it is between Rangeley and rumford too. That’s like 40 miles.

That’s a great road. There’s a hypotenuse to the triangle along the south shore of Rangeley Lake methinks.

Whats that all about? I actually think "Skiology Matt" does a pretty fucking good job forecasting winter weather. His models/predictions have been pretty much spot-on the past two seasons, to include predicting wind holds. (BTW I'd probably delete the part of that that doxes him)
