Friends of Berthoud Pass fall update

    Heads up for all y'all:

    September 9, 2005

    Hello Friends,

It’s been a long hot summer and hopefully you’ve managed to get out and enjoy yourselves as much as we have. A lot has happened in the last few months. The old Berthoud lodge has been removed; the Forest Service is making plans for the next step in the Pass’ history; and FOBP is gearing up for another big winter.

We’d like to take a minute to let you know about some important progress FOBP has made, as well as some upcoming events.

    1. The USFS recently released an Environmental Assessment examining the impacts and effects of their proposed reclassification of the public management areas on the Berthoud Pass corridor. As many of you know, FOBP submitted an official response in support of the plan with a few specific areas of concern. See this link for our comment letter.

    2. We're planning to expand our avalanche training curriculum this year. We are pleased to bring back Hacksaw for our evening classroom sessions-- two in Denver, one in Boulder, and one in the Fraser Valley. We’ll follow these up with our popular on-snow sessions. We also are planning higher level 'certified' avalanche I & II courses.

    3. We're still exploring the shuttle idea, and we've adopted US40 at the summit of the Pass for roadside litter collection (look for the Adopt-a-Highway signs next time you drive over the Pass). This year's pick up date has been scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18 at 9:00 a.m. at the top of the pass. With enough helpers we can knock out the trash cleanup in a few hours and spend the rest of the day hiking, socializing, bbq’ing and enjoying the scenery.

    4. Once again, we're contributing to the CAIC Avy Jam on Friday, Sept. 16. We are seeking volunteers who can help us man the booth for a few minutes, and looking forward to meeting those of you that we have not met before.

    5. We’ll be expanding our outreach in Grand County this year and looking for all the help we can get from our members in the Fraser Valley.

    6. We are pleased to once again offer current FOBP members generous benefits and discounts at several select local area merchants including: Alpenglow, Edgeworks, Freeskier, Mountain Miser, Ski Depot and a few others to be determined.

    7. We're working on hosting at least one telemark film premiere at a very cool venue in Denver and thinking about some other really fun events.

    8. We'll be recruiting for four new “Director” positions in the organization, and looking to bring fresh leadership, new ideas and energy to our initiatives.

In essence, this winter we're moving forward and building on our progress.

None of this is possible without the support of our members and while it’s not our favorite thing in the world to do, we now must ask you to pony up and renew your annual membership with a minimum $20 donation. Share our news with a friend and help us sign on new members—we can achieve more together than we can apart. Thank you again for your continued support.

    See ya at the pass!
