The ‘23-24 Black Crows Junius is a solid wood core option. My daughter got a pair this year and she gets along really well with them.

Was looking at the junis too,
as it’s his money he was won over by top sheet/bases of the chetty

Nope, they're a wood core ski and a damn good price on them, too. Unfortunately my two kids couldn't agree on the top sheet since it would eventually be used by both. Ended up with the Unleashed J, wood core with a full sidewall under foot. Kid 1 really likes them so far.

Easy to get sucked into the Bents asthetics. Both of my kids have skied them on/off. As the kids get bigger and stronger I think the wood core matters. Also depends on how much they ride. My oldest (10) did about 80 days on the 141 last year with no issues. This year he's on the Blizzard Rustler Team (which he loves). He has the Ripper as his pow ski (also a wood ski).
Think you are right about the asthetics. My boy wants a pair of Bents now. He's 10 but kind of small, strong skiier, currently on a very stiff for a kids ski (significantly more stiff than the mantra jr, but a twin tip ) wood core K2 Shreditor 129. Was concerned that they were too stiff for him but he ripped these all last year.
Need something longer now and he wants the 143 Bents. Would these have enough backbone for easy coast skiing also ? Can't justify 2 skis at this age with growth , but need something that is usable here and on our multiple weeks out west.
Cool I’ll prob keep the bents and sell them when he grows out of them (likely next season)

You missed the very important fact that Praxis is currently running a sale: buy any pair of adult skis and get a free pair of junior skis.

The available in stock ones only go up to 130 so no go for us.
I’ve seen some very strong skiing groms ripping around on Bent’s over the last few years. I can’t imagine a light 10 year old would overpower them. My kid was on the them for a few years and never had issues. With the caveat that we ski in Utah, so probably see generally softer conditions that you do.
Awesome, I was looking at last year's in the off season, and I have a soft spot for Black Crows.
For the aesthetics, I thought red and black of the mantra jrs was Slayer material, and the two girls and one boy give zero fucks. Plus, they got heritage Lab stickers, so they think they rock either way. [emoji16]

My youngest is getting older and stronger. Bought the adult bent with his own money. Then bent the edges and compressed the sidewall.
Lesson learned. He did love the graphics. And it did change his skiing.
He’s on faction now and I pointed out the wider edge material. (Yes faction had a bad run years ago. But these seem burly)
Point being let them play and have fun. Kid skis are so cheap compared to tickets and hot cocoa and snacks.
Kill all the telemarkers
But they’ll put us in jail if we kill all the telemarkers
Telemarketers! Kill the telemarketers!
Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason
Daughter had Carson’s first 2 years and then moved on to Icelantics could not find any Carson’s in her ~135 size. Icelantics are wood core as well. Fatypus, Praxis, ON3P all make solid wood core kids skis
"Not all who wander are lost"
At what level does moving to a wood core ski matter for a kid? My son is 7 and on some cheap 120s this season skiing blues in control but not fast. I try and buy next years gear at the end of the season for the best prices and not sure if moving to a stronger ski will be good for him or not.
Some Mantra Jr 128 or 138 depending size would probably be awesome for him. I can’t say enough good things about the kids Gotoma/Mantra skis for inland NW conditions. My kids will be skiing them from 128cm to 158cm eventually. My daughters first fresh day on older beat up Gotomas was an absolute game changer for her and she hasn’t looked back.
(I might have an extra set of 128s if you think you might go that direction but not trying to clog up the thread with that.)

I think once a kid is able to parallel turn consistently and skiing blues, it makes sense to get them more "real" skis. I generally moved them to Manta/Gotama at 118cm.
I have my last 3 sets of kids skis I'm going to unload. Just keep forgetting. 128 Mantra Jr, 138 K2 Bad Seed (great kids ski), 143 Bent Jr. All have wide adjustment and have been used. Let me know if you want to check any of them out.
Edit for incorrect quote. Should have been a response to the "when" question....
Age 10+ and expert skier. If your kid isn't skiing steeps with variable snow I wouldn't sweat it. My kid and his best buddy are starting to ski the named drops at Squaw. Time for real skis. Watching some of their crashes hurts me
Outside of that, probably doesn't matter much until they're teenagers where they get heavier and stronger.
I think there's a reason most skis go wood cores around 145.
Would definitely be interested in the 143 Bent jr
