Jackson MS is fucked.

The drinking water system in Jackson — Mississippi’s largest city and home to more than 160,000 residents — is failing, state officials announced on Monday. Thousands of Jackson residents already have no or little water pressure, and officials cannot say when adequate, reliable service will be restored.

The city water system has been plagued with problems for years, including tens of thousands of residents losing water between one and three weeks during a 2021 winter storm.

At a press conference Monday night, Gov. Tate Reeves said the city’s largest water treatment plants may be completely down.

“The O.B. Curtis plant is not operating anywhere near full capacity,” Reeves said. “We may find out tomorrow it’s not operating at all. We’ll have better visibility on that when we get in there tomorrow.”

^^^I thought about posting that here but was laying back letting the west of the divide folks discuss the issues there. Jackson has TOO much water/rain.. Their pumps couldn't keep up and failed. Ya water water everywhere but people are in danger of dying of thirst and can't easily fight fires or flush toilets.


It's a serious situation but can't they filter and bleach the natural water to survive if they have to? Give out LifeStraws if they have to..

I think I heard on the TV that they've already been on a boil water notice for a month. Apparently water pressure is so low folks can't even flush their toilets.

Agree, and I don't take it for granted. IMO those rich CO landowners can sell their land if they don't like people using the river. Fucking assholes.

The other day I was fishing a small river near town that flows mostly through private ranches and none of the landowners have posted any of the parking spots or informal accesses. I was thinking how cool that is and how lucky we are.

Yup, guess we in OR are spoiled as well. Public has access below high water mark to all waterways wide/deep enough to float a boat. So many good fishing streams run thru public land as well.

He seemed to agree that a gun & a sign were all that was needed to declare a river private. I was sort of stunned that this was coming from the district manager. He also seemed pretty ok with a very limited reading of “navigable” too (like can you push a wheat barge down the water in question).

Navigable means, can you float in it. Therefore, it all depends on your boat. In Oregon, so long as you don’t drop an anchor and hit land, you are not trespassing. I have had my boat and decoys (same rules don’t touch the bottom and use a long line rig) floating in water many a time over private land in the Willamette Valley.

If a landowner thinks different then they can try their argument with law enforcement and if they don’t win their appeal, there is a good chance they get stuck with a hunter or angler harassment fine; if they pull a gun… well off to jail they go.

If it’s public waterway then the public land is the high water mark. For instance, Ochaco Reservoir the private land only goes to the line where the reservoir would be if it’s full in a non flood state. Same for the Columbia and the Willamette.

Go hunt and fish away. Piss on the pricks who think they own it and call 911 when they try to interrupt your recreation.

OR has a map of navigable rivers. IIRC One of the big items of litigation in the Lake Oswego case is if it is a navigable body of water.

Default rule is if you can traverse a waterway “by oar or motor” then its navigable. Don’t know whether canoe or kayak paddles count as “oars”

ETA - this part applies as well.

Additionally, the opinion states that you may have the right to walk on the land above the line of ordinary high water in the least disruptive or damaging way possible, using the shortest and most direct route available, if it is necessary to travel up or down
the waterway.

I’ve seen the USACE denote a dry, 4’ wide, manmade drainage ditch a Navigable WOTUS… The definition is super loose.

Also - “Private Beach” signs are bullshit.
