7-year-old boy killed, grandfather shot after jet ski dispute led to shooting in Florida

A 7-year-old boy was killed and his grandfather injured after witnesses say a dispute over reckless jet ski driving led to a shootout in Florida, according to authorities.

The Tampa Police Department said the shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. local time Tuesday along the Courtney Campbell Causeway west of Ben T. Davis Beach, police said in a news release Wednesday.

“When officers arrived, they found a 7-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to his head and the victim’s grandfather who suffered a gunshot wound to his hand,” police said in the news release.

According to witnesses, a “verbal altercation ensued between two groups” over reckless jet ski driving near an area where children were playing in the water. The dispute escalated when some members of each group began shooting at each other, police said.

“During the shooting, the grandfather was attempting to shield his 7-year-old grandson from the gunfire when they both were struck,” police said.

Grandfather pulled child inside truck when a bullet went through the vehicle

In a news conference Wednesday, Tampa Police Department Deputy Chief Calvin Johnson said the grandfather grabbed the 7-year-old boy and pulled him into a truck when he heard the gunfire.

“When they were inside the vehicle, a round went through the vehicle, hit the grandfather in the finger and the young man in the head,” Johnson said in the news conference.

Johnson said the child was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Tampa police are asking anyone who may have information on the case to call the department. Detectives are still investigating, police said.

Leroid already said his death doesn't count since they shouldn't use 1-19 year olds to define youth and BrainFreeWasatch thinks it doesn't matter since he wasn't white like him.

We're privileged to hang out with empathetic and objective mega geniuses like these two who can always splain away some senseless violence.

It is the price that we pay for freedom, after all.

Actually it was really the m2 browning that won ww2. We made more of those than the ruskies made rifles.

Nice homophobic slur, what is it 1990?

19 year olds aren't children. Pretty simple.

You can be anti gun, you are entitled to your beliefs, I admit violence is a problem, but if your ideas and ideologies are so sound you shouldn't have to resort to hyperbole and distortion of stats to play on emotions and create false perceptions of reality. It doesn't serve anyone. It dumbs the entire national discourse down and just creates division and fear.

Cities located in states with particularly weak gun laws are associated with greater rates of gun thefts from cars.13 In many of these cities, high rates of gun ownership and laws that make it easier to take guns out of homes create conditions under which gun thefts from cars may be more likely.14 Further supporting this trend, the five cities with the highest rates of gun thefts from cars are all in states with particularly weak gun laws.

To answer these questions, Everytown researchers analyzed FBI crime data spanning 271 small- to large-size cities across 38 states.3 Collectively, these cities cover 49 million people. This analysis revealed that in 2020, an estimated 77,000 guns were reported stolen across these cities alone.4 This count is likely a conservative estimate since only 15 states require gun owners to report lost and stolen guns,5 so many missing guns go unreported.6 While guns can be stolen in a variety of ways (e.g., pickpocketing, burglary, robbery), in 2020, over half (52 percent) were stolen from cars.7 In effect, an average of at least one gun is stolen from a car every 15 minutes, amounting to an estimated 40,000 guns stolen from cars in 2020 across these 271 cities.8 This is a stark increase from 10 years earlier, when the majority of gun thefts were from burglaries (45 percent), and under a quarter (24 percent) were from cars.9 In fact, the past decade’s overall increase in gun thefts is driven by the rise in gun thefts from cars.
    and off the bold print:

One study found that lost and stolen reporting laws reduced illegal gun movement by 46%.

so weak laws to regulate their movement, 60% have no duty to even report, don't know who has them to begin with, too many altogether = 40k stolen from cars a year. awesome. sounds very responsible in a law abiding society.

the gun enthusiasts should read Every Town, lots of room for people to have access to firearms in a way that won't leave so much collateral damage. Or just keep going this way where it's fine as long as it isn't your sister, daughter, son, etc?

To chickenshits so afraid of going in public without a gun their CCW/CCL is their prized possession after said guns.. wasachbeater is NOT going to report that the gun that fucking loser left in his unlocked brodozer was stolen... That would risk losing that CCW./CC:L and more importantly, the ability to buy more guns without additional background checks..

Who is taking these guns... pretty much everyone who wants a gun. The kids who used to ring doorbells and run are now going car to car jiggling door handles.. Everyone age 13 and up is now armed. Ya put them in jail for 20 years.. good plan!

Don’t leave your gun in your car, it will be stolen and used to kill people.

Sums up the last 6,000 pages I think.
