they're already doing the work of organizing schedules, now it just involves deciding what time the littles meet their bus this year compared to last
Yes, but constantly changing school schedules has huge repercussions for parents as well as for activities the kids participate in like sports teams, etc. It just seems a lot easier to keep school on the same schedule and have the clock time shift as far as I'm concerned.

Adjusting to the time change twice a year is a way bigger disruption to sleep than outdoor light levels.

My 2 cents: I work 430am to 430pm every day. Take kid to school at 7. I don't care if it's dark in the morning. It sucks when it gets dark so early at night. I realize some people like it getting dark earlier.

Still, the twice a year change is a real bitch, physically.

Trying to wrap my head around Maine and Florida having similar sunrise times.

it's a 30 min window - so perhaps Eastport is seeing the sun 29 min before Orlando?

The article is about how permanent DST will change sunrise and sunset times and then they just show a graphic for sunrise? Seems a bit biased. How about show the thing that's going to be a positive for lots of people rather than just the part that's going to be a negative? Bottom line is the length of day is short in higher latitudes in the winter. There's nothing we can do about that.

Earlier sunrise is a positive to a bunch of people.

I don't know what's true or not with regard to the healthier choice re: time if indeed there is one but I do know that I've been messed up all week. I'm tired and confused. I wake up when I normally would but when I look at the clock I'm an hour behind. Same thing happens at night... all the sudden it's 7pm when my mind thinks it's 6. I don't like it.

While the "reasonable" designations are entirely arbitrary, this helps me visualize why the topic is divisive and why more west coasters are probably more indifferent to the sunrise part of the equation. Thanks

None of those maps are drawn very well. The northernmost point in Maine is about 47.5N (basically the same latitude as SeaTac airport)

This map shows how late sunrise will be, though. To me the point of that map is "hey, look how late sunrise is going to be for most Americans if we got to year-round DST!"

Also good point by Ted. Not sure why they tend to draw the maps that way, but I'll bet lots of people think northern Maine is farther north than anywhere in the (contiguous) U.S. when In fact the northernmost point in Maine is around 47.5 degrees north whereas the whole northern border from Minnesota all the way to Washington is at 49 N. And then there's that weird little blip even north of that around Lake of the Woods, MN.

The northwest angle has negligible population and is like point Roberts - attached to Canada.

Maine is pretty far east for its time zone, which is why even with permanent DST its sunrise isn't going to be particularly late in Winter, despite the northerly latitude. Remember that the sun rises earlier in the east; San Francisco's sunrise is about 10 minutes or so later than Tahoe's.

Has anyone mentioned that the law was never meant to pass the Senate and will never get enacted?

Earth's tilted and spins to the right, yo! But yeah, seeing it on a map is different.

That graphic is for the Winter Solstice. On that day you could draw a line on a globe from anywhere on the equator upward at a 23ish degree angle to the right and everywhere on that line (south of 66°N) will have the same sunrise.

Take 1° off every four days until the equinox, when the sunrise happens at the same moment along every line of longitude between the equator and poles (So Miami and Pittsburgh would be roughly the same)

Listening to people being interviewed about this and it leads me to think that many people somehow equate this with a real longer or shorter day. Somehow it will change the amount of time the sun is in the sky.

Technically aren’t most of us attached to Canada?

Kids can walk to school in the dark. And after school they can learn to play outside while it’s still light.
Or is it better to teach them that a quality view on their commute is highest priority?

Yeah, like kids walk to school anymore. Honestly, that's a pretty major shift since 1974 when they last tried this. I'll bet more than half of kids walked to school then and it's something like 10% now.
