My on-trail maintenization involved bending it back to where it was, but now I can only get the third gear. What is the proper way to fix this? Will I need to buy a new one? Fucking Shitmano.

Probably need a hanger and a derailuer. About all you can do is try to get it so it looks straight by bending it back.
A picture would help.
go to a shop and get them to use a derailer hanger alinment tool and straighten the hanger. Idealy the frame is not bent, spokes not damaged, and derailer still straight and just the hanger bent.
Don't try to eye ball it, you wont get it close enought and the tool is $100

If it's just the hanger that's bent, you can use my cheap and surprisingly successful method.
1 - Remove derailleur hanger.
2 - Lay hanger on concrete floor, preferably with something smooth like a piece of vinyl tile between the concrete and the hanger.
3 - Go to tool chest, remove large hammer.
4 - Beat the bejeebus out of the hanger until it's straight again.
I think we have destroyed about 8 hangers already this year (a lot better than bending a frame; we have lost about 4 derailleur too). You can straighten with any method described already but if you don't have a spare yet, I would buy a new one (should be only a few bucks), fix your old one as best you can and carry that one in your pack. Nothing drives me crazier than going for a steep hill and the driveline skips due to not being straight (everything is bent).
Now that you are hooked, are you going to come to Moab this fall to ride with us? I'll bring a phUnk.....(even if we have to put him in a head-lock)

water mains didn't break, would it be my responsibility to fix them then?
WOULD IT!?!"

I bought a new Specialized Enduro Elite this year. It's got an xt rear derraileur. It came with a stabalizer thing? made by Shimano. What it does is thread onto the nut end of the quick release and pin into the hole on the deraileur where the mounting bolt is. This devise stengthens the derraileur and hanger big time. I normally would bend the hanger a couple times a season, this year I have not bent the hanger even once. Probably Mt. Lion and other bike techs know what I'm talking about. I don't know what it's called but it works great.
You don't need freerides when you got freeheels
