A Ukrainian pilot was killed in first F-16 loss. Oleksii Mes’ F-16 crashed during a combat mission during which Oleksii shot down three cruise missiles and one strike UAV. It's a big loss for Ukraine because he was one of only six Ukrainian pilots so far who have completed the rigorous training program to fly F-16 fighters.

Ukrainian Lieutenant Colonel Oleksii "Moonfish" Mes described F-16s as "more agile" than the MiG-29 he flew previously:

Doesn't detract from the loss, but I don't believe that only six pilots have completed. Wonder what percent of air defenses is integrated to recognize a friendly?

Did an allied Patriot system shoot down an allied F16?

4 days later and the lack of clarity is astounding. Kinda like Nordstream.

Possible. Friendly fire on D Day killed 1000's and wasn't made public for a few decades. FDR bombed Pearl Harbor to, in case you missed it. I have a copy of the memo he ignored.

That was a conspiracy theory first promoted by the Nazi sympathizing isolationist America First committe in 1944. The advanced knowledge conspiracy has been kept on life support by assholes like Gleaves. The mass bulk of scholarly work has totally rejected this idea as conspiratorial revisionism. I'd start with something like At Dawn We Slept, or if you want this subtopic in partiuclar, try Pearl Harbor: The Verdict of History also by Prange.

All I've read is that the aircraft "crashed" during performance of a combat mission, somewhere in western Ukraine.

Hits from a Patriot battery generally don't result in anything that might be confused with a "crash." Owing to the details of its tracking system and terminal maneuvers, Patriot missiles tend to completely destroy small aircraft like F-16, hitting them solidly in the cabin, rather than merely perforating them with shrapnel.

Crashes result from many things: ingesting a bird, mechanical failure, improper maintenance, pilot error overcorrection after avoiding a mid-air collision, or a failed landing attempt, and long-range Russian fire or an unsafe attempt to avoid incoming fire.

Friendly fire remains an option, though.

It should be emphasized the F-16 was lost during a Russian attack involving over 200 missiles and drones. Ukraine is fighting a war. Losses are going to happen. The important thing, whatever the cause, is for Ukraine to learn from combat experience. Speaking of, ...

If the F16 was hit by friendly fire, it would most likely not be with a NATO anti aircraft system, and if it was, it would be something like a shoulder fired stinger. The friend/foe integration up and down our weapons systems is one of our big advantages. A Patriot system is going to know exactly which return is an F16.

Obviously, Ukraine uses a combination of systems, making things much, much more complex. My guess is this has been one of the reasons it has taken so long to put these aircraft into combat.

It is called OPSEC. Ukraine has demonstrated they can, to some degree, control the dissemination of information, unlike their enemy who posts shit all over the internet 24/7.
