A question, what did Putin do when we invaded Afghanistan and then Iraq? Are these leaders supposed to start WW3? Economic sanctions and their own ineptitude are working against the Russians.

RE: No more Russian oil for USA. Yes symbolic but it would still hurt Russia. Cue the GOP 2024 wannabes bitching about to rising costs of energy. It will go up sharply whether or not we buy Russian oil. God forbid people try and use less.

In the grand scheme Putin will either attempt another bluff or he may actually push more chips to the center. He has already put his Nuclear force on alert and has said that Sanctions are equal to an act of war. If his forces remain bogged down or begin to unravel no telling what he might do.

8% is the total of petroleum products imported from Russia, that includes NG. Not that it really matters, we could halt that, do nothing else and we would adjust just fine.

We all buy it if we use oil. If a free bid tanker gets contracted the oil could be from anywhere. That’s what Marc Rich was doing (now Glencore).

I can’t see an Iran deal soon with their Russian ties. I suppose it could happen but Russia has already asked for guaranties in the deal

The only angle I can see, and it'd be a very subtle game, would be providing a credible source saying Putin is bluffing on nukes.

Not that I disagree, I think the reasoning there looks sound. But it certainly would be useful, in a small way, to kick the legs out of his threat.

Geopolitical energy policy getting solved right here

    Thanks for the chuckle.

The tv has multiple live streams of big trucks circling dc. Lots of smoke and flags

Not seeing much but reruns of Ukraine but footage is starting to come out from the fighting back around February 24th and 25th. I guess it takes awhile

    Everything is being well documented

Now that Putin has all but been convicted of war crimes when do you think he just picks up his marbles and goes home?

Putin is definitely putting the CCCP band back together along with the oppressive practices. Expect more isolationism, NHL Players to either return to KHL or defect like back in the 1980s.

I don't see the question at this point is "what about Ukraine?".. That's no different than "What about Crimea?" The question I have is "Who's next?" Putin (and likely Xi) will keep pushing as long as there is no significant military response from the west... and that response makes nuclear escalation more likely than not.. Go big or give Putin what he wants..

I totally agree with that question. We need to look at ourselves from the outside more often. Putting missies in Turkey, flying recon off the Chinese coast, then freaking out when they expand in the South China Sea. But let’s be honest, 80% of Americans couldn’t find any of these places on a map.

Still, shooting down an airliner was pretty ridiculous and Bush did 0 over Georgia.

I dunno. Seems pretty unanimous from even within some of my more conservative circles that we should cut off all the imports we can (not just Russia either) so we can ramp up our domestic industry. ALL I've talked to are on board with higher prices if it means more US jobs, a better economy, etc. Also exciting (that even you'd probably like) is that there some heavy pushes right now from the same crowd to continue ramping up clean energy all toward the same goals. More self reliance is a win-win-win. Hell, I even have another job interview this week for some exciting new green energy projects going on. Many O&G guys have made the switch or dabbling in both. Job openings across multiple sectors starting to pop up as Russia has everyone finally realizing how important this entire topic is.

And yeah. We should ALL being doing our parts to use less O&G no matter what. You won't catch my ass with a lifted truck. Haha

I don’t get the “likely Xi”. Since Vietnam China has never deployed active troops beyond its border except to support UN peace keeping.

What does that mean? A government program that subsidizes exploration by private companies? If they take the money they can’t pay dividends or do stock buybacks.

they’ve literally occupied parts of India and Bhutan. Several PLA soldiers died in a clash with Indian soldiers last year on Indian territory. That party line only works if you also accept the party’s rather flexible definition of what the prc is.

but I don’t think the bands getting back together. Xi is a Russophile in a way and predisposed to them, but china has left Russia in the dirt economically, and perhaps militarily.

I should clarify that what I was saying in an overly roundabout way is that IMO, Grozev himself seems legit, and he seems to think the text is for real. So by implication, I buy it too FWIW.

It is interesting in how it mentions how the Russians were going to accuse Ukraine of secretly building nukes shortly before they actually did make the accusation.

It's just about 10PM in Ukraine and there are reports of a massive Russian air offensive taking place with flights out of Belarus. It's going to be another long night.

Seems to me that stopping Russian oil imports in the short term drives up pump prices which makes the whole thing politically untenable, but maybe that’s the point of those cheerleading this particular effort.

We have already tanked their economy so hard Putin says it is an act of war. I guess they haven’t stopped their invasion so we should just keep applying pressure? I don’t see a clear answer other than an economy reliant on oil is pretty fragile in these circumstances and a different energy mix would be helpful.

It's a cynical ploy to raise gas prices in order to blame raising costs on Biden.

Food prices are going to rise too. Ukraine is the breadbasket of the world and Putin's war will cause prices to rise in the West as well as cause famine in poorer countries.
