Flac and shn are just compressed files.
You can download programs for both and you just drag the files into the program window and they turn into wav files ready to burn to cd. (you have to hit decode in flac)
You need to download 2 things for shn but it's really really easy.

Sorry, these would not be my reco's to a newbie. Some excellent songs, but not a complete picture like Workingman's, Am Beauty, Europe, One for the Faithful, or Live Dead. I really do like Anthem's cover though.Originally Posted by Buster Highmen
By far my favorite Dead studio album and the only one I listen to with any frequency:
The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion) [2:07]
Beat It On Down The Line [2:27]
Good Morning, Little School Girl [5:56]
Cold Rain And Snow [2:25]
Sitting on Top of the World [2:01]
Cream Puff War [2:25]
Morning Dew [5:00]
New, New Minglewood Blues [2:31]
Viola Lee Blues [10:01]
Their first album, they never topped it in hte studio imo.

Another album not mentioned here that would give a newbie a good overview is Dead Set, which compiled songs from the 1980 runs at the Warfield and at Radio City. I think Reckoning is from the same shows, but the acoustic sets. I've seen the Radio City shows on PBS before.
Just thought of another one, GDP's remastered release of 8/13/75, One From The Vault, Bill Graham's intro of the band before Help on The Way always give me the chills..."Will you welcome please the Grateful Dead!"
Also to see what the shows were like pick up The Grateful Dead Movie.
I love OFTV..."on bass guitar and vocals, Mr. Phillip Lesh..." I think that was a Blues for Allah release party or something.Originally Posted by Artie Fufkin
The newer Winterland stuff has some great shows from '77 right around new years.
Europe 72 is a great starter CD. Live From the Vault Vol.1 is great too. I personally perfer all live Dead recordings before I'd even think of buying the studios. Dick Picks are great, Volumes 10 and 12 are my favorites. Some of them have way TOO MUCH DONNA G. on them and thus have made me a huge Brent and 80s Dead fan as well. Find yourself a good copy of Scarlet Begonias into Fire on the Mountain to start yourself off right. Also get some Live Jerry solo albums...Holy Smoke!

Either format works. I use dbamp or mkwact to convert to .wav to burn CD's or .mp3 to sync on my ipod. Seems like flac is getting more popular. You may alse need smartftp or another client to manage the downloads. Sometimes you router settings need to be tweaked to allow peer to peer downloads if you go that route.Originally Posted by Artie Fufkin
I havn't downloaded anything in a year or so and it looks like the methods have changed a little. etree.org and archive.org can show you the way.
