    Meathead Film's "Epoch"

    Anybody check this out yet?

After months of waiting for my pre-order to arrive and one change of address and canceled credit card later I finally made it to Skiershop to pick up my copy.

Despite the wait I was thoroughly impressed. There might not be any ski movie like it. Fascinating blend of documentary/skiing action - and the segment on Katahdin is a must-see.

So if you're at all interested in the EC get it!

totally agree! i bought it about a week and a half ago. not the best skiing, but it truely explores the EC ski season 100%. loved the documentary and comentary in addition to the gnarly EC backcountry.

I appreciated how they weren't showcasing the athletes so much as the terrain. They rarely identified who was skiing, as if it didn't matter - just a bunch of dudes hiking and skiing, not trying to prove who has the biggest cock.

I watched the trailer, and I think it would be interesting to watch.

Also read about the history of East Coast BC skiing in Lou Dawson's book. The east has a very rich history.

The Meatheads do great work. I think Epoch totally seperates them from every other film company out there. Geoff said its his life work, well I say damn good job. Also got a sneak peak at Born From Ice, good things coming for sure.

Keep your eyes open for shots in Skiing and Powder from those guys.

    bump

    just watched it,

Not nearly as soulful as I thought it was going to be. I was expecting it to be more like Sinners or Immersion, but its a full on historical documentary, the research is almost as important as the actual skiing. However it was still a worthwhile watch and really does a great job showcasing some of the Northeastern mountains.

out of five stars I'd give it a solid three

I'm disappointed that they didn't decide to ski the highest point in Rhode Island, Jerimoth Hill.

I love that clip too. It's from Elevated, and the skier is the late Alec Stall, for whom Epoch was dedicated.

This probably belongs somewhere else but it's a funny story. I met Alec through his friend from home who I happened to be friends with from college. Alec met up with our club ski team one night in Mad River (at the fabled Garrison Lodge) before a race, just to hang out, drink some beers, and catch up with his old buddy. There were a bunch of other teams there and the racing is not exactly taken seriously in our division, so it was somewhat of a party atmosphere.

So this one psycho hose-beast of a girl from another team is drunk and hitting on Alec. It's pretty apparent that she's not leaving, so Alec, to get this ogre off his back, claims, with expert feigned sincerity, "I only hook up with girls that I am in love with."

Ha! To top it all off he ends up making out with an even uglier girl from our team. What a night! RIP Alec.

"I only hook up with girls I'm in love with." That is priceless.

That cliff in the clip is the same they helmet cam in the BFI trailer.

Epoch is definitely not for anyone looking for cliff drops or ballsy lines. Geoff and Rooster did a tremendous job of getting historical footage and info gathered and put together. In another life I'd be at a different college and see Epoch on TV and think to myself "I wish I had active friends like that." Damn cool guys.

The Born From Ice premiere is Friday, Oct. 7th in Burlington. I'm sure we'll be partying hard that night and anyone and everyone should swing by. Otherwise they've got upwards of 50 tour stops all over the east (as far south as Dela-where. ) About 10 of those stops will be specifically for Epoch.

I just read the Meatheads' tribute page on Alec. Very sad story. Sounds like he was a remarkable guy.

East Coast Hardcores are ususally some of the finest people I have met. Ususally their story goes something like, "I would be in Utah or B.C. but my family is here; I feel connected to these mountains; this is my home..."

Kudos to Alec Stall and the Meatheads for pushing the envelope right from home. While i attended college near my home in the east and complained about not being in the west, these guys were getting it done. Better men than I.
    Chocolate? This is doodoo, BABY!
