From Dr Jeff Masters, the meteorologist who runs www.wunderground.com Aug, 27th:

I'd hate to be an Emergency Management official in New Orleans right now. Katrina is pretty much following the NHC forecast, and appears likely to pass VERY close to New Orleans. I'm surprised they haven't ordered an evacuation of the city yet. While the odds of a catastropic hit that would completely flood the city of New Orleans are probably 10%, that is way too high in my opinion to justify leaving the people in the city. If I lived in the city, I would evactuate NOW! There is a very good reason that the Coroner's office in New Orleans keeps 10,000 body bags on hand. The risks are too great from this storm, and a weekend away from the city would be nice anyway, right? GO! New Orleans needs a full 72 hours to evacuate, and landfall is already less than 72 hours away. Get out now and beat the rush. You're not going to have to go to work or school on Monday anyway. If an evacuation is ordered, not everyone who wants to get out may be able to do so--particularly the 60,000 poor people with no cars.

What fucking country do we live in!@!?!

"Governor Kathleen Blanco says 300 National Guard troops have arrived in the city fresh from duty in Iraq. She says they "know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so, and I expect they will."

The Guard troops are carrying M-16's, which Blanco describes as "locked and loaded."

This is my favorite (or maybe least favorite) quote so far... From Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

Insisting that aid is coming as fast as possible, Chertoff said, "You can't fly helicopters in a hurricane. You can't drive trucks in a hurricane."

    pure genious.

We live in a country where the poor, elderly, or sick are disposable. I'm sure they'll have plenty of time to explain that they're in the Walmart for the food, before the consequences of "locked and loaded" come to bear on their behinds.

Bush is not a truly compassionate man and has not risen to the occasion now or in times before when the nation needs him to be presidential.

apparently he didn't get the memo notifying officials that the remnants of Katrina are out over the North Atlantic right now.

I think the point of his post is why was an evacuation not ordered earlier by the state/local gov, and why did the state of LA and the city of NO not gather every school bus in the state to evacuate those in need of help evacuating.

My point is who gives a goddamn fuck where Bush is?

You're all so tied up in the politics of this that you're ignoring the fact that innocent people are being shot.

Coast Guard has suspended rescue flights because they're getting shot at.

You all need to shut the fuck up, go back to school, go back to work, or fucking HELP somehow.

"New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin blasted the federal government as emotions spilled over in an angry radio interview, saying he was "pissed" at the lack of help the historic city had received.

"I need reinforcements. I need troops, man. I need 500 buses, man," he said. "Now get off your asses and fix this. Let's do something and let's fix the biggest goddam crisis in the history of this country."

"We authorized $8 billion to go to

"You mean to tell me that a place where most of your oil is coming through ... that we can't figure out a way to authorize the resources that we need," said Nagin.

What do you think the chances are Karl Rove and company have already met to discuss how to best shift the blame away from the President and to anyone else it could possible stick to?

Bush is on now, with the govenors and emergency relief heads
    .
He doesn't even maintain eye contact with the people that are talking to him. He's lost without a teleprompter. He just looks like a dummy.

If terrorist were to strike now, we're all fucked. We can't handle this as is.

Agreed, and for his own safety he may not want to land in N.O. today. I don't care where he is physically but i do want to see his leadership in this situation.

Trust me, i'm not ignoring that part...and yes the politics get in the way, but they have gotten in the way of the innocent people getting what they need(food, water, safety)

Would we be in this mess in the first place if our government had gotten off their asses in the first place? Nope. Is it ok to point the finger? Yep. Should we all do what we can to help? Just did.

Bullshit. This nation has the resources to help these people and they have been marshaled absolutely piss-poor up to this point. Ever heard the phrase "the buck stops here." No? I guess Bush hasn't either.

They have guns, why cant they use them? Remeber there part of the armed forces. It's bullshit that they cant do there jobs due to small arms fire. Would gun shots prevent a rescue chopper in Iraq? did it prevents rescues in Vietnam? SO WHY THE FUCK CANT WE RESCUE OUR OWN CIVILIANS!

FUCK YOU BUSH! I hope one of those peeps in NO finds there target.
