This is one of those innovations that should become a standard with all ski and skin attachments. It seems as though it could be done on the tip also. They could call it the Hoji Hoji 2 Too kinda like those weird-ass running shoes and then eventually just shorten it to Hoji.

I don’t use any tail attachment and have never had a problem

Resurrecting old thread. I cut new skins for this season but the tail clips are kind of long so I needed to cut a new "belt loop hole" and in the process I sort of cut off one of the tail straps. They are stupid long anyway so I was going to go skimo and no tail straps.
I am skeptical because if we all really don't need tail straps then why have them? I don't want to find out way out there.
Am I going to die?

As long as you take care of your skins, keep them clean and store them properly the glue will keep them stuck to the base.
I’ve taken multi day hut trips and never had an issue with not having a tail attachment.
Some things that help are cutting the skin so it’s not on the part of the base that doesn’t contact the snow. Keep them in your pocket or inside your jacket after transitions on the descent. Try and keep snow from contaminating the glue during transitions. These are things that can help if you use a tail attachment too.
I think that the elastic type tail attachment can actually work against keeping the skin contact with the base, especially on skis with more camber. What happens when you tension a strap by pulling on both ends?

This is also how I did the skins for my BC90s, no tail attachment at all. Keep an eye on the glue quality of last 6" or so and reglue that part with gold label occasionally. I also got ski trab tip attachments so I can rip from the tip. So far so good.
Bonus is that you can (sometimes) make this skins a bit shorter, depending on the ski.
I see a number of people out there with super tight tail clips, having to really fight with them when putting their skins on. Invariably they are the ones with skin issues, and I think you're right, enough tension, especially on a traditional shape, will lift the skin off the ski.
I always run the tail clips with just enough tension that they don't fall off but put 0 pressure on the skin itself. I've notched the tail of all the skis I own which don't already have a notch and that has done wonders for keeping them on. I also trim quite a bit of skin around the tail so there are no square edges. Haven't had issues in years. Not sure I'm ready to go tail-clip free though. One botched kickturn and the back of the skin is fucked for a while...

Personally I wouldn’t try skinning without tail clips or some tape on hand but I’m a sloppy beater on the skin track. I ruin the glue near the tails because I’m imprecise, I like twin tip skis and we don’t get a ton of snow.
G3 tail clips were the best I’ve found for twin tips and this season I’m experimenting with a semi-diy tail clip for another set this season.
ok thanks I will keep all of this in mind. It will be a good experiment. one ski with a tail clip and the other without!

some guy trying to prove whatever used to cut perfectly good tail clips off

I buy skin material and tip loops, I’m not cutting tail clips off.
