Online Avalanche Encyclopedia

Ok, another project to get more info out there to backcountry users. This is an online glossary/encyclopedia that will be hosted by the National Avalanche Center and be linked to by any forecast center that wants it (the Utah Avalanche Center will link to the terms directly from the forecast). I'm only up to Density on the list (starting at Anchors), but now is a good time to get some feedback from this group so I can tweek the rest of it if I need to. Excellent resource. I like the visuals that you are using with the description and it all seems user friendly. Maybe you could link a contact tab at the bottom of the description for questions or comments.

Very nice and way more detailed than I expected.

Only suggestion is to add forwards and backwards buttons so that someone can scroll through the entire site without having to go to the master list and pick out the next word.
If it were just a simple text glossary, I dont think you would need this, but since there is so much detail, I think even someone who knows what the word means will want to look at every page just to see what additional related avy tips they might learn.

Excellent resource and thanks to Bruce Tremper for permission to use the excerpts. His book is the best.

Thanks for the feedback so far. The contact button would require someone to maintain it and I don't think anyone has time or budget for that. I get the best feedback in here anyway. Thanks for the props on the illustrations, they are a lot of work so I'm glad they are usefull.

The forward and back button is a great idea, I think I'll add that, thanks.

And yes, many thanks to Bruce Tremper, no way this could even happen without his contribution. I can't imagine starting this from scratch. Hopefully it will inspire people to read the book, Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain, which is the best one out to date.

what i'd love to see are more actual pics (where applicable) to go with some of the definitions. for example, ed laChapelle's secrets of the snow does a good job of helping people read the snow w/o the digital data most tend to rely on. seeing the pics are invaluable for some since they usually have to come into contact with the situation a few times get realize what they are seeing.

Another great resource is the Canadian Avalanche Association's online glossary.

It covers all things avalanche plus a few other related rescue things. Not as many nice illustrations, however.

Thanks for the latestest responses. I agree on the pics, we need more. I see this as being very fluid the first couple of years with lots of additions as people get psyched and submit more pics.

BTW, if anyone has pics they want to donate (that they own), please email them to me sarge@aros.net. I need techy, action, and consequences shots. Or any pics that you think might add to any of the chapters.
