I'm in Athens and fortunately my transportation is a) bus, b) bike, or c) walk. However, it apparently has gotten crazy. Around 3pm everyone went nuts over gas, trying to get to the stations realizing the prices were sky rocketing and the tanks were running low. The gas stations are running out of gas and supposedly are out or will be by tomorrow. A woman I was talking to filled up around 3pm and she said there were a handful of stations that had already stopped and they put trashbags over the pumps. I'm not sure how this will all pan out, but I can at least be entertained by it considering I don't need gas. I will make one prediction however, a lot of siphoning of gas tanks.

No doubt, especially since he was paying $269 earlier today.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Why worry? If you ask Mr_Gyptian we can afford to pay anything for gas and shouldn't bitch about it.

Prices have gone from $2.43 to $3.29 today in my neck o' the woods. I guess that means I'm lucky?!?! This whole situation could have very serious reprecussions on our whole economy, somethings gotta give.

Isn't much more radical than what happened to energy prices in CA a few years back when the eastern half of the US sat and watched. Admittedly there are very different causes, but it's all just a quick glimpse of what the future holds for energy supplies. FWIW, Sacramento is paying about $2.90 for gas at the moment.

Hah! Apparently Athens has a more serious problem. There is supposedly not the shortage I had been hearing about all day. However, due to the popular opinion that there was and the rush to the pumps, there may be a shortage in the next couple of days. I am still a little curious as to why the woman at the barber shop told me there were stations with bags over the pumps? Probably stations under construction Anyways, judge for yourselves.

    From staff reports

An unfounded — yet, detailed — rumor apparently sparked a gas-buying panic in Athens today, as locals rushed to stores to buy up fuel.

The panic caused long lines, tense nerves and shortages at some stations, but suppliers and store owners said the widespread concern that local retailers would stop selling gas at 3 p.m. was false.

The long lines at many gas stations continued well after 4 p.m., however, as motorists raced to fill up their gas tanks to beat a string of price increases during the day.

Motorists saw steep price increases at gas stations all over town - some topping $3 a gallon - as area wholesalers reacted to steep hikes on the gasoline commodity market.

But the rumor that local retailers would stop selling at 3 p.m. may have created an area gasoline shortage, said Bobby Tweedell of Tweedell & Van Buren Oil Co. The supplier had about a five-day supply of gasoline on hand, but today’s run on gasoline meant the supply could run out late Friday or early Saturday, Tweedell said.

The pipeline that supplies oil to the area was shut down by Hurricane Katrina, but will reportedly resume pumping Sunday, he said.

Overreaction by Athens-area drivers to the unfounded rumor has exacerbated pressure on an already thin distribution system, said Harriett Lay with Lay Brothers Oil in Athens.

"This panic is not doing anything but making things worse," Lay said. "We have no idea where the rumor (about gas stations closing at a certain time) started, but I sure would like to get my hands on the idiot that started it."

It is all due to conditioning by the Department of Homeland Insecurity.

Wasn't there a made for TV movie about this?

I think the plot involved a hurricane in Louisiana taking out some pipeline, and then the resulting panic.

I bought gas today, in fear of what prices will rise to this weekend. There is no real reason gas should go up 20% in one freakin day.

Haven't heard a word about any states - or the fed - dropping their taxes on gas, though, have we?

Damn! Talk about bad timing...here's to hoping you have a relatively fuel efficient vehicle Regardless, I'll bet the trip will be worthwhile even if it costs a bit more.

a lot of it is people simply betting that gas will go up in price. If enough people bet that it will go up, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. No real faggotry to it, just people trying to figure out where herd will run before it actually does.

I had to line up to get some today and by the time I got to the pump they had run out...RUN OUT... of regular so I had to get the middle grade stuff. Fortunatley the BP that i went to decided to keep their prices down to 2.69 for what I got, but the place across the street was up to 3 for regular.

I passed a station on my way to dinner and on my way back it had gone up about 20 cents in less than two hours.

Its all crazy and Im glad I wont have to fill up before I leave for school.

There are commercials on the radio from a lobbiest group asking the citizens from WI to call their congressmen to repeal the anual automatic state gas tax increase. There also a few state assembly men proposeing this same tax be eliminated.

And why, exactly, would they drop the taxes on gas? It's the major source of funding for transportation infrastructure... seems logical since road use and fuel consumption generally go hand in hand, no?

Plus, in most states the tax is less than 45 cents/gallon (including federal taxes), which isn't nothing but also isn't much compared to the current price jumps.
