New FJ = New beetle, as in nothing like the old one besides the name and a few lame styling queues.
Whoever said Jeep has lost their way, has lost their way. The Unlimited Rubicon may be the most capable off-road vehicle to have ever driven off a showroom floor. Ask around. Check out the Brute, too. I won't talk about the Limperty, though.
Most people who own 4x4s don't need them and should be driving subarus. No offense to subie owners, you were smart enough to recognize that right off the bat. If you really DO need a 4x4, as in really use it off-road, why in the f*ck would you want to do it in a $30K+ truck (unlimited rubicon exlcuded)??? I piss my pants with laughter everytime I see someone drag a body panel across a rock in their brand-new range rover. If you are off-roading in an F-250 then you probably don't live near mountains. They are definitely too big for most of the trails around CO.
I have a mildly modified cherokee that I traded for my beat audi, straight-up, and it is probably the perfect truck for out here. Light-weight, good HP, 4-door, short wheelbase, solid axles, blah, blah. They just have small wheel-wells, but that's nothing a sawzall can't fix. I drove mine right through an obstacle that half of the Xterra club in front of me were getting winched out of a week or two ago. Most of them were pretty modded out, too. That's what solid axles do for you. I still don't know how the RAV4 at the top of the trail got there. Brass balls, or sheer stupidity, I guess.
What the hell was I talking about?? Oh yeah, that new FJ is weak. Buy a real truck you don't mind beating on and a save the other $25k for a Mitsu Evolution for the street.

If I won the lottery, the Mercedes G-wagen would be high on my list. Unfortunately we don't get them in Oz. Lockers front, back and centre, live axles, coils all round, ladder frame. High price tag for what it is, but I wouldn't mind trying one out. Plus it looks like a 4wd unlike some of the vehicles posted in this thread.
Again, my idea of a 4wd vehicle should carry:
5 people
Spare gas
gear for 5
some spare tools
2 spare tires
I don't see you getting all that into a wrangler. They're capable off roaders but there's too little utility and too much sport. As far as new offerings go prolly only the G wagon covers all of the above. I don't even think you can put full length racks on the new land rovers![]()
landcruisers are nice. nothings like the roaring thunder of that 93 hp, 3b powerhouse. i must say though that i have so much shit that the 4 door suits me better, fuck electronical, all mechanical is where its at. it just hit 333 333 kms..it rusts though..
shut up and ski
Really? My 83 CJ-7 disagrees with you. That car has been through more shit than 99% of the Toyotas on the road. It's the reason I'll never sell it...ever. And this is coming from someone who owns a Toyota. I have a 2005 4Runner that I absolutely love, but it will never replace my Jeep. The latter is like a fucking little tank.Originally Posted by KillingCokes

Easily done, rear gate rack + safari rack.Originally Posted by 1080Rider

SO? what your point?Originally Posted by EPSkis

I've got a full length roof rack on my discovery and I know I can hold more gear than almost anything you'll find in the woods. It still seems to get a little cramped. For two people a wrangler would be great, just not good for much more...Originally Posted by likwid

Sprite, here's the deal with the desiel. 15 years ago, they got the reputation that they were smelly and problematic. Truth is, they get better gas mileage and typically have longer lives than a typical gasoline engine. The design of the deisel has come a long, long way.
When Volkswagen came out with the Jetta TDI, it was specifically NOT marketed as a deisel (thus the TDI acronym) for that very reason. VW wanted to get people to drive the car first, before they were able to fall back to their pre-determined notion that desiel's bad, uummkay?
Anyway, that's the poop.
Oh, and I saw a pack of those FJ's out in the SoCal mountains the other day - they were obviously doing a photo shoot or some promo thing - they had 5 of them, in all different colors, climbing around the bottom of the canyon. Though I'm not a big fan of the styling, it did look sorta cool.
Ooops, yeah sprite, what he said:Originally Posted by pointemstraight

once you've driven a diesel going back to gas just isn't a realistic option.

to all over you who know about landcruisers:
i've got a 92 cruiser and i know these cars are known for being very slow and underpowered, but i can't go more than 30mph over vail pass. hoosier pass or any step windy road is a disaster, shifting all over the place. the thing does have 220,000 miles and original transmision. As you can probably tell i know nothing about cars, but is this normal for the car or is there hope that by fixing something it can pick up some speed (enough to make it to the mountain before lunch). I like the car and its great to beat up and not worry about, but i have to beable to go a little faster.
hmm, my subbeee just got totaled a week ago by some dumb bitch that ran a stop sign, and im in the market for a new car. Too bad i don't have like 70k lying around.
I keep a mirror in my pocket and i practice looking hard.
