Bozeman, Montana (Ski Press)-The United States Forest Service has issued the Record of Decision (ROD) to approve the Bridger Bowl Master Development Plan and Special Use Permit. As illustrated in the area’s new mountain map, Bridger can now expand to the South into the Slushman drainage and to the North into Bradley’s Meadow when financially feasible.
This will eventually add approximately 611 acres of new terrain to the ski area, allowing for the first significant expansion of lift served terrain since 1978. All skiers and riders should be advised that all future terrain as indicated on the map will remain out-of-bounds during the 2005-2006 season. All terrain outside of our current ski area boundaries should be considered backcountry conditions.
Bridger Bowl also will have a new boundary policy this season allowing day ticket and season pass holders to exit the mountain to access backcountry terrain. The Gallatin National Forest is providing access out of Bridger Bowl Ski area into backcountry terrain for recreational skiers and snowboarders.
Backcountry access will be limited to two gates: a south gate located near the top of Pierre’s Knob Return Road and a north gate located near the top of North Meadows. Anyone exiting the ski area needs to have a very strong knowledge of backcountry travel in avalanche terrain and be well-versed in current snow conditions.
The backcountry area adjacent to the current ski area boundaries will not be patrolled and will not be a part of our avalanche hazard reduction program. All Future Terrain designated in the ski area master plan and area map outside of the current boundary lines is considered out-of-bounds and backcountry terrain. Once any skier or rider passes through the gate to hike and/or ski/ride out-of-bounds terrain, they assume all riskes associated with backcountry travel. All rescue efforts will be referred to Gallatin County Search and Rescue.
wonder how bad they'll bust people for ducking the southern boundary rope on the ridgetop. It'd be the natural place to go for skiing slushman's, or for traversing all the way over to Saddle Peak. Let's see, hmm, take the gate they provide where I still have a long ways to hike/skin, OR I can hike 400 vert feet, and then just traverse on the ridgetop all the way over....
impressive to see they're finally doing a terrain park. Wonder what they'll groom the halfpipe with - employees with rakes? 55-gallon barrels towed behind a snowmobile? Or if they'll turn it into the mogul fest they let happen everywhere else.
