Kirkland S'mores are absolutely delicious. We were sad to see the Fannie Mae's S'mores were leaving, but apparently Costco did it better and cheaper. Ruthless.

Friend got run down in the parking lot of Costco last week. Bitch comes flying up the wrong lane, clips my friend at the knee, throws her off the hood and doesn’t stop to exchange info. Be careful out there folks. Materialism is America’s drug and Costco is the trap house.

Yep. I use Costco for tires only to price match with Discount.

If you're a fan of Rao's sauce then stock up the next time it goes on sale.

Campbell's Soup bought out the manufacturer for $2.7 billion, link. And even though Campbell's is proactively denying any changes, it will take them about six to 12 months to F-up the tired and true recipe.

Luckily there is Kirkland San Marzanos in a can that make better marinara than Rao's. Only *slightly* less convenient.

I haven’t been able to enjoy jarred marinara in 25 years. Is Rao’s that good? This is TrG and people cook around here so I trust your opinions.

    Prego is a 3. Your homemade is a 9. What’s Rao’s ranking?

I’d love to know your marinara recipe. Been thinking this place could use a Cooking For Jongs thread.

I'm no Italian chef, but I don't make red sauce anymore, I use Rao's, because I came to the realization that my sauce isn't better than theirs. And takes way more work.

I heard renowned Jaque Pepin say pretty much the kind same kind of thing, that you don't need to make your own Ketchup, I do one of his recipes that calls for 2 squirts of ketchup, also he has been around long enough that refrigeration was was not common when he started in the game and it made life so much better in his mothers restaurant

I guess what I don't understand with jarred marinara is why buy it if you're going to add to it? I get the 8pm Thursday night, the kids have to go to bed, I need a quick sauce and the jarred stuff makes complete sense. I'm a proponent of that. I have a cupboard full of curries for just that.

But does anyone here use jarred sauce as an ingredient to their meal? That I don't get. That I used to do, but I no longer get because canned tomatoes and fresh spices are cheaper and better.

I used to work on a marinara, never quite perfected it but it was homemade so it was good, better than any jarred sauce (or jarred sauce with stuff added, like meat and/or veggies). Until I tasted Rao's. It's simply better than mine. Maybe not a TON better, but better, with no work. And it makes a great "base" sauce for whatever I want to add. Meat and onions and a splash of cream for a bolognese, or maybe some capers and sauteed broccoli for a different direction.

It just isn't worth the extra work, especially as a single parent, to make my own, when it's not actually better.

Trying to get up the nerve to buy a brisket. Seems to be the only place around where I can walk in and grab one.

I use Raos as my pizza sauce--lot less work and I'm not sure my own efforts are any better. Costco Raos ends up cheaper because I can do 3 detroit style pizzas from a single jar and it is stable in the fridge long enough to actually make all 3.

And they have whole Prime brisket most days! Just sitting there for the taking!

I just don't have occasion to use that much meat...need to work out a better way to store it. Given how long it takes to smoke a brisket, it doesn't make sense to cut it into smaller pieces to smoke, but I don't have good reheating frozen smoked brisket so it actually tastes good.

I'll buy the twin-packs of pork shoulders though...I can smoke one and then portion-out and freeze the leftovers in vacuum bags. Those reheat very will (especially with sous vide) and taste perfectly good with a bit of sauce. Make sausage out of the second one or just smoke and freeze a ton.

Well, the rest of this discussion belongs in the what are smoking thread. I plan to make pastrami. And I plan to separate the flat and point. And may have to cut the flat in half anyway for my small grill. The intention is to freeze some of it once brined and then smoke as needed. I've been practicing by smoking store bought corned beef. It's expensive and the packages are small. It turns out alright, but I want to do it from scratch. I'll probably brine and smoke a pot roast next to test the whole process before I commit to buying a whole brisket.

    a couple things,

you are probably a better more accomplished cook than me cuz I never really learned to cook and I am cooking for one so I don't have to worry about cost but at least I do cook, instead of going out or eating out of cartons

jarred marinara i use not veryoften, I supose i could make my own but I use the jarred Tikka masala , I will thro in vegies/ potatoes/ spinich that would otherwise go in the garbage so it adds flavor and doesnt get wasted I don't throw much if any food out

yup I could probably make my own from sctrathc but Pataks is good stuff ^^ I will cut up a family pack of boneless chicken thighs, dump in 2 bottles of Patak and whatever leftover vegies made their way into the freezer, put it in 2 cup Anchor Hocking direct to micro dishes nd freeze

Its not super hot cuz they are selling it to white people so I add a little hot sauce while making or while warming it up so I end up with maybe 5 individual meals that require no planning or effort

Yeah - Patak's is pretty decent, though *far* from a homemade Indian style sauce.

Time, burner space, another pot/pan to clean, etc. Its a logistics question. For minimal benefit you can significantly up the logistical investment. Why dont you make your own mayo? because the fucking food processor is a massive PITA to clean, for example.

Start making your own mayo - thank me later:
