I didn’t realize the global traction this story got today. Seen it on several evening news outlets and of course all the online places.

Interesting to learn about the law that protects the names of those that kill wolves from being disclosed by the DNR. For anyone that would enjoy an interesting presentation regarding wolves in the Yellowstone ecosystem, I'd highly recommend this one. Video quality is spotty but the audio quality is alright and some really good data in there. I find 5 years of studying wolves firsthand much more believable than rancher/hunter, politician, or cityfolk conjecture.

A few of the highlights: At the 6:20 mark they cover wolf populations in the park since reintroduction and that shows that in a given area, wolves are essentially self regulating their population in an environment with unlimited food. Wolves are the #1 killer of wolves and have regulated their own numbers between 100-120 over 3500 square miles. Generally wolves and other apex predators coexist, bears and big cats aren't keeping them in check, they do that themselves. At 26:20 they cover the relationship between wolves and elk killed in the park. Wolves target aged, unhealthy elk past prime birthing years.

I mean, I know the TGR crowd largely likes to vilainize hunters, but that dude isn't a hunter in a wholistic sense. He's literally sick.

While this might seem ironic or even hard to believe, I'm confident many hunters are having an even harder time reading that than many non hunters. As hunters, we get to see all of these animals in the harshest, most unreal conditions, watch them survive, hunt or forage and simply exist in landscapes and environments that would kill a person in days. Respect is an understatement. I think many hunters covet nearly all of the animals they get to see. It's one thing to view animals on the internet, TV or even from the car (nothing wrong with any of this). It's another to share their habitat for extended periods of time. In short, that's why hunters are huge conservationists and also self-police so rabidly.

Fuck that guy. He deserves all the bad shit coming his way from this story. And WY's legislature should be embarrassed.
