Add another who didn’t know who Kelly Clarkson is. But I don’t think I’ve ever heard a Taylor Swift song either.

“Drinking causes drinking. Heavy drinking causes heavy drinking. Light drinking causes light drinking.

The reason to moderate is to avoid having to quit, thus losing a pleasure that’s been with us forever.

We don’t have much freedom in this life and it is self-cruelty to lose a piece of what we have because we are unable to control our craving.

In drinking, as in everything else, the path is the way. What you get in life is what you organize for yourself every day.

There is an ocean of available wisdom from Lao-tzu to Jung to Rilke. It’s there in a preposterous quantity. If you drink way too much it will kill you and the souls of those around you.

If you moderate you can have a nice life.”

Only ppl who don't think at all, ever about moderating are going to have a nice life. They already are, they are normys.

The problem with moderation is most alcoholics feel worse after JUST one or two drinks than they do with NONE. It's 6+ or nothing. Yet we keep trying to convince ourselves that one or two will be fine.

Ya, doable, but just more miserable agony wanting more than when I just have nothing.

If one or two works most if the time and you're not wishing you could have another you're probably not an alcoholic

Can't remember but I think it was either the Old Mungus ranch or the property across from them.

it appears a post that was advocating for drinking 'in moderation' has been deleted -

also, I would strongly contest the claim that only having ' one or two drinks most of the time' is Not alcoholic behavior.
it is my understanding Alcoholism is a dependence on alcohol, independent of quantity ( a matter of psychological Want, or one's belief they "need a drink" ) -
Not every alcoholic drinks to intoxication , but by definition every alcoholic has a dependence on alcohol.

My Congratulations to any who are successfully sober - Congratulations.

I have three friends who are presently facing this (struggle) , and
I have lost four friends to alcohol.

I do not believe history will view this era ( and it is a long era ) kindly.

    Good luck.
    peace. skiJ

    moderation is socially acceptable -

A self-assessment I would encourage, is, the next time one considers having 'one or two drinks' , see if you can go a week or a month ( or longer ) Without those drinks
( tomorrow doesn't pass my 'smell test' ).
IF one decides, it's okay - Because I am Only going to have two -
... talk with the person in the mirror.

    Good luck.

I certainly can’t and won’t advocate drinking in moderation - it doesn’t work for me

that’s just something one person wrote

what I can identify with is that it’s a bummer to lose the pleasure of drinking good beer

Alcoholism ( speaking from 24 years continuous sobriety in recovery working with other alcoholics every week) isn't how often you do or don/t drink. It's what happens when you do drink.. even if it's been a year since your last drink.

If 1-2 leaves you craving more instead of totally content for the rest of the day (or week) that's the indication of the problem.

I saw yours ~mikey. I think there was another post, too. ( initially either right before, or right after yours. someone claiming, they were good - in moderation, with two drinks. )

My claim is, IF they can't go without those two drinks, that is at least a warning sign. "moderation" may not be freedom from alcoholism.

Just up thread - average treatments to Sobriety (?) Five -
That's Not a good success rate.

My point - PLEASE Be careful ! "moderation" is a trap.

    Thank you. skiJ

    And Again -
not all alcoholism follows the same pattern
( I would claim every case has unique attributes
( I have known alcoholics that only needed two drinks a night - And they needed those two drinks, five nights every week )

    They were not drinking to intoxication ;
    they were drinking to effect.

Yeah, I was married to old man Mungas’ daughter. I have zero contact now, they sold their ranch ?

edit: looks like it. That ranch could have been mine. She was a hard core alcoholic and I started going to Al-anon meeting by myself just to try and make sense of things. Being married to an alcoholic was like living inside a tornado. I loved that ranch, but I divorced her to get my life back. Crazy seeing it for sale.

Hey all. Jackson bartender for five years, I probably know some of you in real life but haven’t put internet names to faces. Realized awhile ago that I can’t live my life how I want when I’m drinking, but also love spirits and wine and cocktails in a professional and passionate way.

A good dive bar that is just slow enough and about to be too busy is nirvana. A simple cocktail with attention to detail is art… a shitty beer after is hard day might as well be medicine.

But I’m over it. I don’t heal, I get fat, I get angry, my brain doesn’t work anymore, my knees hurt more than they need to. But I can’t seem to stop for more than a week.

I’m working with a therapist, and my family is in my corner. I’m not sure what to name it yet, or what my goal is, but this seems like the right place. Mostly because this is also the community that I’d never think I’d open up to.

WTF, did somebody delete their line? Because it hit me hard and I've been waiting to read it for a solid decade. It hit me hard--

I think I know who it was, but I have no intention to start a delete-debate.

Anyway- you wrote something like; "Not having one is easier than having just one."

Sometimes it's the one-liners that make sense. I know who you are, and I'll reach out to you soon. Maybe.

Just know that we all need subtle language to help us find clarity. Like my ski coaches screaming for years; "Lean Forward!!!" When what they meant was; "Push on the front of your boot."

    It's one sentence, and it's game-changing.

Yes... not having one is easier than having just one.

And yes, it’s obvious after it’s said, we all know it to be true, but there is a brilliance in being concise that humans have turned into an art form. Some call it poetry.

It's "simple" but it's not "easy". Don't drink. Go to meetings instead. That's really all you have to do to get started taking your life back.
