    Summer Burnout

It seem like every August I seem to get a bit burnt out on riding my bike. I haven't ridden in a week. I don't know why I don't feel like riding. But I go through this every year. I go from riding almost every day to riding 1-2 times a week.

I think the reasons are like this:

March and April I'm just stoked to be riding, and those rare days where it's not raining are enough to motivate me.

May and June the weather finally gets nice, my fitness is back, and I'm finally wearing shorts almost every ride.

In July tour mania inspires me to ride hard every day.

I think it's some sort of post-Tour syndrome. Plus, other things are going on, like BBQs and beaches and other summertime things.

Anyone else go through something like this?

I'm personally going nuts because I sprained my wrist a week or so back, then it felt like it was going to die on the last ride, so no riding for a few more days. I'm going nuts.

I'm going through the same thing...
for me the choice is between climbing, or riding either the MTB or roadie. Lately i've been more interested in climbing and i think my bikes are lonely. I'm hoping i can spend more time on the bikes. Oh, btw...we just had our first child(Kid Stoke thread) so that takes some time up as well. Basically, i feel your pain.

Same here, I have been riding extremely hard all summer (at least by my standards) to prepare for the jay challenge, now i am kinda chillin, looking forward to some cooler temps and fall riding.

I'm stoked on riding. I'm stoked skiing is coming. My problem is where do I save money to spend it on what kind of gear???! AHHH!

heh - I was just thinking about this thread the other day. When I first read it I thought "WTF? I want to keep riding as much as I can!". Then it hit the other day - that sluggishness and that starting to feel a tiny bit less motivated to get out there.

Definitely slowing down a bit, though it just may be really busy work days sapping my energy a bit.

Even up here, it's been a really really hot summer, and with my late wake up schedule, (late working hours), I have not been able to get out as much as possible. I welcome the fall with open arms. Love it up here, but the days get too short.

I felt that way about two weeks ago, until I decided to do the local DH shuttle and snapped my frame. I've been bikeless for over a week , and I'm starting to lose it.

I train and race all spring on the road bike, then train all summer for mountain biking...I get a little burnt with the training, but I really look forward to fall riding cause thats when i go on long, epic rides and explore new trails, not worrying about heart rate.

It's even worse in my case. I used to be a riding fiend, 1-4 hours practically everyday, but now with each passing year I'm down to 1-4 rides per season if you don't count the odd run I take at the bike park where I work. I'm almost embarrassed by it- at least my bike should last a while- new in May 04- not too much wear and tear.
Guess I'm just into different things now. Call it long-term burn-out after 10 or 15 years of riding. I think the only cure is a ROAD TRIP, but I don't see that happening anytime soon with gas at $1.03/ litre!

That's how I felt this weekend for the Sundance race. Really surprised me! It was kind of a "blah, blech, I biked yesterday, not in the mood for another ride tomorrow, yech." And that really sucks compared to the joy of biking I felt a few months ago. Not quite ready for winter yet, but it makes me happy that there are 4 seasons here - bike a few months, ski / ride a few months, nice to switch it up.
This touchy-feely Kumbaya shit has got to go.

i definitely hit that summer lull every year. this year it seems to be different since my road bike was totalled and i was forced to take some time off. i did go out on the mtn bike, but i wasn't as motivated. in any case, i just got my new road bike last week and after a few rides, i seemed to be getting it dialed in!

Well I'm still not up here full time yet, but I've been riding weekends up here around the Kennet Square area and some around Chester Springs.

I was completely lying when I said this, as I went riding 2 days later. Found some sweet superfast and smooth singletrack (as rare as gold up here) with sweet drops (not to flat!) and jumps all over the place.

No burnout for me whatsoever. Started the year on the road bike a ton waiting for the trails to dry out, then rode both bikes alot, then after a huge race at the end of July I took a week or two off, and now my singletrack addiction is stronger than ever. I literally get twitchy and cranky if I don't ride for a few days.

ps- I love my new Avid Juicy 7 brakes. Maybe upgrading prevented summer burnout?

I'm with y'all, but blame it on heat and bike theft . . . without the roadie, I really am itching to ride . . . still have the MTB drive though, but can't force myself to commute somewhere everyday to do it . . .
