I broke the zoom lens glass on my phone sitting on it. It would have cost $650 for the official fix, $129 third party. Fortunately, I took it for a swim in the ocean and bricked it before I was forced to navigate that decision. I use a protector now. Image quality hasn’t suffered. It doesn’t get smudgy any easier than the glass. It does scratch more easily, but replacements are cheap and easy to swap.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Not sitting on your phone is free, though.

    Radom Unthreadworthy Question-- Cars

Our family car situation (2 cars; one family size, one compact) is up for discussion. I have three kids. 9, 12, 15. Age 20 = driving age. Do I downgrade my family car now to buy a mini suv that I will hand down to my 15yo in five years, when she reaches 20 and gets her license (as per Japan?) Or-- do I sell what I have, lease, and then cross my daughter's path when we get there.

I kind of like the idea of driving her car myself for now, and then handing it down in 5 years time after it's paid for. (And then getting my own new rig.)

    18. Japan. Might as well be 20 for discussion’s sake.

I don't think there are many of us here living in Japan (you and one or two others?) that know the local realities needed to make such a decision. It boils down to predicting the market and your future finances, right? I leased three cars over 9 years. Long term, I spent more than I needed to and ended up with no equity. Short term, the decision made sense every time. Of course I miss the equity. I'm still driving the Toyota Sienna we bought used ten years ago during that same frame. And it's still worth at least $5K. More in this market.

I just watched the movie Clueless with my daughter. How is that movie popular and not considered uber creepy?

It's a love story between a 15 year old girl and her 18/19 year old ex-stepbrother.

I think the main love interest is between a young lawyer, and his boss’ high school-aged daughter.

    Sounds like a Pornhub video?
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

He's not a lawyer, he's a college freshman, and it's not his boss's daughter, his "boss" is his former stepdad.

It’s based of Jane Austen’s novel “Emma” from 1815. In that story the lead character Emma “greatly overestimates her own matchmaking abilities; she is blind to the dangers of meddling in other people's lives; and her imagination and perceptions often lead her astray.”

At the end of the story she marries her next door neighbor who is 16 years older.

My wife’s a vet and insists they don’t preferentially poop by other poop like they do with Pee. But I’ve seen it a thousand times. She’s just quiet when I point it out. And I’ve learned to keep this shit to myself.

My current dog has a hard time going unless he’s backed up to some grass or weeds that are tickling his ass.

Not the answer you want, but the answer I have.

One dog I had would absolutely never poop on pavement/cement. Which made visiting my parents in Manhattan with her tough.

My labradoodle poops next to other poop, even if it's his own. Makes cleaning up the yard easier.

One of my dogs just goes when the mood strikes him - surface be damned. The other is like a cat. Where can I do this without detection...
