That’s what I was thinking, probably an effort to be more accurate in the nomenclature.

During the greatest period of over use of antibiotic treatment, some bacterial infections were rampant, like chlamydia. But, they rarely became symptomatic before a pt. was prescribed antibiotics for an unrelated infection.

So STI and STD are different things, although they are generally used interchangeably by lay people. You should know if your weekend of hookers and blow left you with and STI or an STD, but you can tell your friends about it using whatever term you want.

Well not every infection becomes a disease. Infections is a broader more inclusive word. If you get a STD you have trouble but if it's just an STI you still might luck out.

I'm not sure why we needed to broaden the term to include stuff that we don't actually have to worry about much.The worrisome stuff was covered by the old term already.
