They do have that certain je ne sais quoi. Perhaps a little porch outside the doors? With steps leading down to the gardens?

My Brother in Law's mother killed herself last night. I only met her at their wedding. I'm not particularly close with him- they live far so I only see them at family vacations or the occasional zoom but we get along fine, otherwise we exchange emails or texts only for family logistics. Would a text or email be too impersonal... to be honest I don't know what to say if I called beyond sorry for your loss and I'm there for you if you need anything... and not even sure he has anything to say to me either so I don't want to make things awkward for him. Obviously I feel bad and want to offer my support. I know it's all nuanced interpersonal shit but anyone have advice? Thanks.

Maybe a sympathy card with some flowers or some other thing you know he enjoys (like hazy ipa). Replying politely to texts and emails can be hard in times like these so a one way communication of condolences and support can often be easier on the people hurting.

Sympathy card. Mailed with a stamp. Donation if there is a charity. Can't go wrong.

Call your sibling. Give them your support I am hear for you talk because it will be hard on them and they will be the main support for your brother in law.

Send a card to your brother-in-law, sibling, and kids if they have them.

Stimulus checks: did anyone get a paper check this last round of stimulus? If so, when did you receive it? Do you know when the IRS site claims to have mailed it?

The IRS site says that "We scheduled your payment to be mailed on March 26, 2021" but I still ain't received shit.

No idea why I am getting a paper check when the last 2 stimuli were direct deposited, but whatever, a check is fine. If I actually get the damn thing.

Sorry to hear that. Since this is someone you do see on vacations and he's family, I would call. Even if you don't know what to say--nobody else does either. I'm sorry. We're thinking about you. If there's anything I can do to help. It can be brief, unless he does want to talk, and you can talk to your sister as well. If you call a couple of times and he doesn't answer you can send a physical card, and you can still call your sister.

So, I went through a DUI checkpoint tonight. Haven't been through one in 15 yrs, somehow. The officer asks when I'd last had a drink. I said yesterday. He said ok, follow my finger without moving your head, and he basically performed a sobriety test on the spot while I was still in the driver seat. It looked like the car in front of me had the same thing. Is this standard procedure now for checkpoints? I wouldn't think that is legal in CA. At least he didn't ask me to recite the alphabet in reverse, I can barely say it from A to Z : ) . And double glad he didn't ask me to pull his finger instead of follow it. That would be illegal for sure lol.

Yes a card and flowers. This is one of those times. I have blown it off and did some long term damage to the family relationship by simply doing nothing

Never any shortage of opinions here. Did a search. Didn't think it warranted a new thread in Tech Talk. Looking at buying flatware. Oneida is what I grew up with and seems to be reasonably priced, any recommendations? Has the quality deteriorated?

Stimulus mailed April 2nd, USPS has been real inconsistent. With that being said, the Amazon shipments are always there on time. Bezos negotiated a sweetheart deal with usps.

I'm partial to Sherrill. They're the only flatware manufacturer in the US and apparently they started as a supplier to Oneida. It's nice stuff imo.

Thanks Ice. Seems real nice. Can't get 18/10 Oneida at that price. That's why I was asking, seems like you don't want 18/0. A lot of things on back order. Must be cause of all the Covid break ups. Willing to wait if there are no other options under 100 bucks.

Got a $200 gift card to Nordstrom for helping someone out with a thing. What should I buy?

    Fiestaware!!!! Not radioactive since 1972!!!

Seriously durable, micro and dishwasher safe. I’ll use the plates in the oven here and there for burritos and stuff like 350 375. Prolly not recommended for the latter but I didn’t think about it.

You didn’t narrow it down much. I just cruised Nordstrom for shits and giggles and found some amazing things.

    Only $1300

    Only $950

More serious answer, depending on your tastes, but a little more than your certificate.
