When did the center turn lane morph into a pull out into and drive on and eventually merge lane? Of for that matter a passing lane.
There are some places where you will never catch a break in both directions to pull out and turn left. So you need to use the center turn lane. Try turning left onto Rt 1 in Ogunquit or Wells, ME during July and August.

    I hear ya,

I live just off of MT-191 and it can be busy as hell. That said I need to use that center turn lane to turn into my hood and it is distressing to find someone driving in it.

If they are sitting motionless in it waiting for a break to merge that is one thing, driving in it for more than about 100' is sort of shitty.

In the past couple of weeks I have had morans try and use it as a passing lane.

I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Ah. Ok, I missed that point about motion. Ya, you sit and wait, or at the most edge over with your blinker on so someone will let you in. Definitely not a passing lane.

People here are starting to use it as just another lane. Not because we have traffic, but because of so many recent transplants from CA, CO, TX and FL.

I saw someone driving down one of those yesterday. Moderate traffic in the actual lane but it was moving at the expected speed. Guess he was just feeling special?

I see that center lane driving once or twice a summer here.
Just driving along like it’s a third lane….
I figure they’re just gaped out tourists but it’s pretty amusing.

Is there somewhere those don't exist, so someone from that place can not understand their purpose? Is there somewhere that has them where the convention is they're a passing lane?

Same people who disregard the right turn only right hand lanes and go straight through. I guess they think turning a few blocks up qualifies as a right turn...

It sounds like that’s the lane for people who have the ballz to drive in that lane. It’s gotta feel like a boss move when there’s no consequence other than geezers complaining about you on the interwebz.

I use that lane to get to the head of the class when I'm riding ma' motorcycle. Then rip off a 3.0 sec 0-60 to the next light.

Yeah, it's cool to just make up your own rules.

When I mentioned recent transplants I was commenting on the relative aggression, not the rules.

The law in WA is a little different than other places I've lived. You can't use it as a passing lane, nor travel more than 300 feet, but you can make a left turn into it, and merge from there.

Yeah, that's what people do. You better be careful, though, since people are going to assume vehicles are actually going to turn when they're in that lane and might merge after the intersection and right into your path.

Conversely - the people that *don't* get in the right turn lane when it starts, but wait until they are 10 feet from the turn to move into it. Then they get pissed that I'm right next to them (because I'm going to turn right and got in the lane when it started).

Does Tucson still have reversible center lanes--that are travel lanes that are one direction in the morning commute and the other direction in the evening commute?

One nice thing they did in Truckee was to put islands periodically in the center turn lane on Donner Pass Rd. When things get backed up--usually Sunday afternoons during snow storms--people used to use the center lane as a travel lane which of course makes it worse for everyone else when they try to merge in when the lane disappears. The islands make that much harder to do. They can still use the shoulder as a travel lane, and do. Me first.

Well that really sucks. That site had amazing info, including a calculator they developed based on a multiple-regression analysis that would predict your time to piss clean based on current urine metabolite levels and body fat %. Maybe see what's available in Google Cache?

    That's the "chicken" lane.
