Room in Jackson?

Hi, I am moving out to Jackson September 1st, with no job and no place to sleep. I am passionate about skiing and art. I am moving to Jackson to ski. I love music, Allman Brothers, The Band, Wilco, Beck, White Stripes. I enjoy skiing, biking, art, and hanging out. I can cook alright, not too messy, mostly keep to myself. I like hanging out, partying, and barbeques. I like building things and making art. I don't really know how to sell myself in writing on a chatboard but those are the things that I would say define me alright. If you have a room for around $400 near or in Jackson Hole, I would love to live there. I dont have too much stuff, and I will be able to pay up front for the first months rent.
ALSO, if anyone has a line on a possible job opportunity, I would really appreciate any help. I have worked construction 3 years, tennis pro 3 years, and restaurant service 3 years. I am open to most anything. I would really like a night job so I can ski the days or a job at the mountain. Any advice is appreciated.

If you have a room for around $400 near or in Jackson Hole, I would love to live there. I dont have too much stuff, and I will be able to pay up front for the first months rent.

Most people pay $450-600 for a room in Jackson. If you don't mind driving over the pass everyday, Victor is much cheaper. The pass sucks though and you run the risk of getting stuck on the wrong side of the pass during storms.

Ideal location is Teton Village, but it's hard to find a place for under $700. I justify spending more money on rent because I spend less by not living in town...I dont go out as much, I dont drive as much, I don't go to the grocery as much, etc. Anywhere on the Village Rd is good because you are still close to the mtn, but it is cheaper than the Village (the Westbank, the Aspens, Teton Pines). Wilson is good b/c it's at the base of the pass, if you are into the psuedo-bc scene of Teton Pass Resort. The downside is public transportation doesn't go through Wilson, so you'll have to drive everyday. Living in Jackson has its advantages. Proximity to bars, restaurants, groceries... Rent is cheaper. START bus stops everywhere, so transportation is convenient. East jackson is cheaper, but it is also further from the mountain. I lived in east jackson for a couple weeks before moving to creekside. I preferred the creekside/aspen meadows area because it was the last bus stop on the way to the mtn and the first bus stop on the way home from the mtn.

As for jobs, you should have plenty of time to search for a job before the influx of ski bums hits in November. Passes are expensive, so I would advise getting a job at the mountain or find a place in town that offers a pass or discounted pass.

Thanks for the living info and more classifieds. Im not coming out with much money at all, so I'm going to have to dfind somewhere pretty cheap to begin with (back of my truck for a while). But all that is really helpful, I appreciate it. I've never been to Jackson, just read a lot about it and heard stories. Do you think it's necessary to go to the job fair for an on-mtn job? I think I want to work in a restaurant. Do they offer discount passes at all?

To get a "good" job working for the mountain, going to the job fair is pretty much necessary. If you can't make it though, there are usually a few restaurant/retail jobs at the mountain left over. You can also find a job working at one of the other shops at the village and they generally pay better and include passes with most of them. Most shops will start you out in the 8-9$/hour range, which is better than the standard $7.50/hour the mountain offers.

As far as living goes, i think living in jackson is the best option. You have the bus access around town (free) and to the village (free w/ ski pass). Yeah, it can be cheaper to live outside of town like in wilson or victor, ID but it's harder to get around. With gas prices these days you're better off living in town or sucking up the extra 100 or 200 bucks a month and live the high life in the village. As far as jobs, i found the job fairs to be the most useful which usually take place around the end of october. I made the mistake of moving to jackson in sept, right at the end of the summer season and the beginning of the dead and awkward fall when no one is hiring. So don't make that mistake, unless you don't mind digging holes for a temp agency... Basically just ask around alot, the best jobs are the ones that are found through word of mouth, most of the jobs were snatched once they hit the papers (every wed as mentioned above). Other than that, it's kind of hit or miss but fun either way. Goodluck.

UPDATE: Does anyone know anyone looking for a roomate (or 2) in Jackson? I could pay 400-500 a month and would like to move in right away. Also looking for a job, if anyone has any leeds, it would be much appreciated. Thanks again, Nick
