The older I get, the better I was.
Lots of singletrack, assuming you are an XC rider and like to climb.
Ski area: you can do gondola laps (gets boring quick), or head up and over the mountain and connect with continental divide trail or fish creek trail
Downtown: Howelsen has lots of singletrack if you want quick loops, head into Orton meadows side (climbers right, look for red gates), to avoid climbing the road the whole time, also some pretty fun zig-zaggy downhill.
North Routt: my favorite area, nice to get out of town... very scenic, tons less crowded. Head north on 129 until you hit Clark, turn right on Seedhouse... watch for trailhead signs once the road turns to dirt... most of the longer routes start off on the left side of the road (tip: bring a good map otherwise you can get lost pretty easy). Scott's Run is probably the best to start out with. Be careful not to choose a trail that ends up in Zirkel Wilderness, can't bike through the wilderness areas.
Mad Creek: fun, challenging, connects with a good network of trails. Beginning sucks, but turns into nice rolling singletrack at the top. Gets crowded on the weekends, but once you get higher up it thins out.
That should get you started. Check out Routt County Riders website for trail info, also Ski Haus website has some good info.
More than ten years later I still have great memories of the 1101 from Rabbit Ears to Buffalo Pass. Then you head down the Buff Pass road to the top of the Spring Creek Trail and that brings you right into downtown. The trail rolls along between 9 and 10,500 with a couple of ridable creek crossings and a few lakes that are just right to stop and smoke a bowl by. Then the road down to the Spring Creek trail can be a bit dusty but it's really fast and then the trail down is (or was) pretty well maintained high speed mixed single and double track.
Not that it's on topic or anything, but I'm coming to Ninham with you on Sunday... Going to Jiminy tomorrow.
