I’m just here for more dosed n solo tfw stories.....good shit++++
I guess I’m just a callous fuck.........but keep it open and let the cards fall as they are played
If people stop dying........everyone will want to do it
.........runs away and ducks
Ned only skied on nordic gear. Phenomenal athlete. Asolo extreme leather boots and Karhu extreme skis. Won the North American telemark championships two years running.
When we skied the Pfeiff NW couloir 1st time, I ascended the line, he went up Airplane Peak and over. I chopped steps in the concave ice for tip and tail in the gut on the descent with my ice axe / ski pole; it was 4 feet long. When he came out of the ice I asked him to make a turn for the camera.
Only time I heard Ned say "I don't know, I'm scared." He made one...
We stood below it and ignorantly figured it might never get skied by anyone else but us; nordic gear was so shitty then and alpine touring gear was worse.
I was on some Rossi ST 650s with Silveretta beartrap bindings and San Marco mountaineering boots. 6 weeks to the day of healing up from a compression fracture in my lower back. 1st run in that gear and with my healed back...
Trade route now with good gear and a rappel, eh?
Time spent skiing cannot be deducted from one's life.
"Trade route".
Still scary as shit with all the fancy gear and the knowledge that it goes. Still gets people in huge amounts of trouble. I've booted out of it in the past after getting too optimistic and finding the steep section after the dog leg in WI2 conditions. I've never charged into it with 100% confidence. And I've never made those last 2 or 3 turns right above the rap, always make some excuse and sideslip. Some people in the range may treat it as a walk in the park but I think they're part of a very small minority...
All of this to say that 1) you're even more badass than I suspected and 2) why isn't there already a Wasatch history thread to be a repository of such adventures?? Some of the best reading I've done online was the Wasatch history thread on UtahClimbers.com: nothing but stories from the pioneers of choss munching in LCC. Made me appreciate the "trade routes" much more...
You're onto something here. Imagine how easy it would be to convince people that they shouldn't follow you to your secret stashes if you had explosives with you... And the possibilities to solve parking and road congestion issues are, well, mind blowing![]()

The point I am trying to make is sarcastic, yet related to a serious issue. It is that we as a state have a lot of activities we actively participate in and advance that have high risk. I narcisstically do not want to see these gates closed. I would have no problem with a check for equipment, but believe any of these proposed solutions will not solve the problem.
Final report out form the UAC: https://utahavalanchecenter.org/avalanche/58594
Awe fuck that report is sobering......some serious armchair quarterbacking about to commence about the partners response......skins???....when he was above victim....wtf?
+++ vibes to the victim and his tribe
report says he didn’t know if he was above the victim. (he descended part way before the search). tough call, but faster to descend on skins than climb without.
feel for all involved
No, no and no. The victim takes all blame here. He killed himself making an extremely poor choice which his partner disagreed with. Now his partner has to live with the trauma of CPR, digging out, being too exhausted, all alone to do what he can in a high stress environment, and all you can say is 'derp, skins???'
Listen man I’m not placing any blame on the partner......agreed it was the victims decision to ski that line when his partner obviously was not feeling it and owns this thing 100% and I feel for the partners scar he will carry for life......... but isn’t the play to ski downhill with transceiver searching first if you’re above the incident? Sorry if it hurts your feelers but incidents like this are learning experiences for all......and sorry if it’s just too soon
Every year’s thread needs a Roj.
I'd imagine panic/shock played a big factor into influencing the partner's search decisions. From the article looks like he didn't even find him with the beacon. He just saw a boot sticking up out of the snow.
Well, first please fuck off with the 'not placing any blame' passive-aggressive bullshit. And if you can't understand the report explaining why he did what he did, that you supposedly read, sorry. I don't want to hurt your feelers either bud, but fuck off dipshit.
"Additional details about the sequence of events were provided by the victim's partner, who performed a heroic rescue by himself. Unfortunately, this avalanche was fatal, but the partner gave the victim the best chance of living that few people could have matched."
Yes, but he was most likely concerned with all the hangfire on a slope that he just told his partner he didn't want to drop into, them he watched his partner not even take one turn and most of the slope ripped. Not saying I would or would not have put skins on, but he was trying to save his own ass by not getting caught in the hangfire. Rule #1 of scene safety is rescuer safety.
An important take away here is the obvious- if someone in the group doesn't want to ski a slope, no one should. They likely didn't take into account the fact that if it would avalanche, the rescuer is now forced with exposure to a situation he didn't want to be in in the first place.
Not trying to come off as an armchair QB and decide right vs wrong, but that's my two cents.
.......k my bad...... Tried to have a discussion n failed so I’ll just go away.....carry on
