Fucking sad. Can’t even imagine being able to put my skins on my skis after watching my buddy get swept away in a slide, although I think it was probably the right call. So many take aways here.

Well done. This thread needs a bit of funny to offset the last very sad page.

Understood, but I for one am not feeling stoked.
Our current snowpack couldn't have come in a worse year with more folks touring and the powder froth more so than ever on account of the Covid.
This is the kind of snowpack that kills patrollers, not just tourers.
Look at what happened Saturday with 1.5" new water weight albeit with a bunch of wind.
Post control releases, natural events taking out 100% of slopes that have 20 year return rates...
This is the kind of shit where one can remotely trigger large slopes above from the flats if we get a storm of say 3"-4" of water.
Its the kind of season where a photographic record of the range would really help; knowing what slid large and going there to ski the next storm whilst being careful about getting there and away when remote triggers are possible from the flats.
And such a weird junk show vibe at the ski area, too bad we have to share it with the guests...
Send us some down east stoke, please...

Besides, my flip phone takes shitty pics that I don't know how to post anyway!

edit: sorry to be a downer, one could hope for a huge storm to reset. Just doesn't seem like this is a winter of really big storms...
Time spent skiing cannot be deducted from one's life.

yeah it's a bit callous after a heavy week to ask for us to move on.

it's not callous to post it of course it's appreciated.

Well here’s some ski team kid stoke from hanging bowl.

When we were about to drop over to STH I heard some snowboarders say “let’s beat those kids”. Guy on skis says “ you’re not from here are you?” “No, why?”

“Because you can’t keep up with those kids.”

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

Totally agree all, this was more the 9990 gate back and forth that we can armchair until we go red in the face, not trying to take away from the tragedy preceding. It's a rough year for sure and the sobering pages prior are going to make me get my party together and do some serious beacon practice and burial drills when I'm back.

I was also staring out at a frozen lake, 30mph winds and hearing reports of freezing rain on the hills nearby so I was spiraling.

New snow is great for stoke, but don’t let the stoke make you lose sight of the bigger picture. The PWL is lurking, so play it smart. Educate yourself if you have to. That picture above is from the Snowbird Thunder Bowl area, off the High Saddle, vicinity of Exit Gully I think. A buddy and I skied it in great untracked powder late Monday, then with warming on Tuesday that is what happened. Most likely released on the PWL. Inbounds. Sorry for the anti-stoke, but be safe.

Damn Whyturn, looks luscious. It came in heavy up by me.

When I first started thinking about non lift serviced access, I was told that one of the few most important things to keep in mind is your tolerance for risk. Personally, mine is very low. I think that even though we all look at the UAC report everyday, prepare physically, intellectually and mentally, are aware of our current surroundings/conditions, have all the appropriate tools and are able to competently calculate to a degree potential risk, we need to really get in touch with how much risk we are willing to accept. If someone is willing to accept the risk, then so be it.

Wow....pretty big crown inbounds on controlled terrain...i still remember that inbounds incident probably a decade ago now at the bird....

Be safe....skiing is super fun, but not worth dying over.

    very NICE!

No Kidding. Every year I seem to come across a 4 or 5 year old ripping up 9990 (on the Dutch Hollow side) with their mom or dad.

Hi Utah folks, I'm having a little reunion with some friends and we're looking at SLC area. Range of skiers from intermediate/advanced to expert. We're thinking Alta/Snowbird for a 3 day weekend. Thoughts? Any tips?

If you're doing it on an actual weekend, stay in the canyon and pray for a road closure. If you're commuting up the canyon every day, I may reconsider.

    Um yeah.

And PSA: if you don't wear a beacon inbounds, you should.

I don't know how to put this, but you could never ski before 1pm all 3 days without waking up super early. Even then, you will be in the car for 2-3 hours on a pow weekend day and even then, it may not work out at all. Unless you are slopeside.

JTG4 can probably confirm, but I think that terrain had just opened for the first time for the season.

Not at all, that zone was deep untracked powder when we skied it Monday afternoon. On Tuesday there were numerous crowns in Boundary Bowl, but nothing that looked that big.
