    Anyone listen in on USAW?

UAC is suggesting a common radio frequency depending on which drainage you're in for group to group and emergency communications. Apparently Telluride started this a few years ago with good results.

Interesting idea. I like it, but I’m notoriously pessimistic when it comes to these things. I will be bringing the radios into the BC this year now. Will this only work on the BCA’s or do your generic Motorola or midland radio freq’s sync up?

Every two way radio, walkie talkie, whatever you want to call it generally operates in the FRS (Family Radio Service) Frequency Bandwidth. The main channel 1-16 is the same across all manufacturers and has a corresponding frequency. The privacy tone is a secondary frequency. If you're on Channel 1 with no subchannel selected or the standard 0, you will hear everybody on that channel but they won't necessarily be able to hear you. If you're on channel 1 subchannel 2, you will only hear other users on channel 1 subchannel 2.

    List of channel/subchannel frequencies.

The BCAs I believe you can use the dial on the shoulder to flip between four favorite channels and then use the screen to swap between the rest.

This has proven to work in Telluride, but I'm curious how it'll work with this many users and this large of a population base. I'm imagining lots of unnecessary chatter, people forgetting to switch frequencies as they cross the ridge, and still seeing 10 people skiing on top of each other on the South Face.

I think it has a lot of potential, and it works well with radios like the link that you can easily switch frequencies. With that being said, I kind of agree that the Wasatch has so many users, and a lot of people aren't super well-versed in radio etiquette.

My confidence in the general public being able to make concise radio comms without walking all over each other constantly is low.

That map could also double as a "places to avoid this winter?"

This. Having experienced the absolute junkshow that is radio coms within groups of 12 to 20 while on several hut trips I can't imagine the catastrophe that would be a common radio frequency, even if you narrowed it down to individual drainages. The twice-daily valuable nugget of info will be drowned out by endless streams of useless drivel from people coordinating their gnar gnar drops down the Black Knob or discussing the proper spot to put a kickturn up Cardiac. Even if 2Dogs had its own frequency you'd never be manage to get a word in sideways. People don't have the discipline and will ramble on about what they think matters. And in most of our minds what we have to say matters...

yeah, this - when the dude first said "each drainage got it's own channel" i mistakenly understood that to be each larger area - eg, cardiff, mineral fork, grizzly, silver fork, etc - my first reaction was "it'll be hard to track what drainage gets what frequency, and some of those are down right gang banged" - but now the thought of a common channel shared by an entire canyon makes me nauseous. there's just no way. no fucking way. even if folks had insane discipline, 95%+ of all radio traffic will not be relevant to a given party.

I'd be tempted to clog up the channel with horrible dad jokes.

Any bets on how many times you'll hear "Dropping!" on an average weekend day?

Only legit if it comes with the "3, 2, 1" intro. That's when you know it's serious. As far as numbers, I think once / minute is a good bet.

Communicating via radio takes some serious getting used to it turns out. I use them once in a blue moon and every time I realize how poorly I communicate on them. These days if I'm not within shouting distance it's because I'm skiing with a plan that was extensively discussed at the top. Deviation from said plan would only occur in situations where a radio wouldn't do much: getting lanched, exploding against a tree, etc....
I have on one occasion pulled my phone and texted a buddy who was hopelessly tangled in brush but that shit was so dense I'm pretty sure it created a radio dead-spot

Not many. I normal only go out on weekdays. If I venture out on a weekend day, it will be far from the crowds. Millcreek, Neffs, Lambs are all pretty empty in the right spots, even on a weekend...

They might be closing the doors indefinitely. GMD scooped up the head chef from the Shallow Shaft mid summer.

they're all flat as pancakes with nothing good to ski, deserted for good reason. all the worthwhile terrain in utah is in upper LCC/BCC, so everyone should continue to ski there to the exclusion of everywhere else.

You forgot to mention the heinous bush whacking that ensues immediately when you leave the trailhead of any of those spots.

good point, you pretty much have to bring a wood saw to hack through. plus with no established radio frequency, how will you know where you're going?

A wise man once told me, those that only ski on weekdays miss 28% of available ski days. now that I think of it, that may have just been a calculator.

more importantly, if there isn't a radio frequency, how can you dibs your lines and brag about your sends? if you can't broadcast it, did it really happen?

Thing about weekends is that you want to go to a spot where there are the least amount of people. Deer Valley and the Unitas come to mind

    Laps needs to be taken.
