It certainly seems to be a common occurrence this time of the year. I was hoping not in a La Nina year.

I actually don’t mind a few weeks of high pressure in January . Good for touring and I’ve already lost 4 fence posts and my entire yard has been a swamp since mid November.

I would mind if my saturated yard could dry out a bit, but I hope the ridge doesn't last too long. We all know that it doesn't really get going until President's Day anyways. Hoping to get up 4 days this week. Will be looking for kooks on Powder Tuesday and will be up with 3 of my kids on Wednesday for most of the day.

Ridge is great if if starts after 3 ft of cold powder, not so great if on the back end of a pineapple when the snow level only drops to pass level after the precip is dried up

Managed to ski northway right when they dropped the rope. Had some of the best steep lines and turns I’ve had in a looong time out of X. Got out after a few laps and it turned into mega line. Had some guy and his wife slip, slide and domino a solid dozen + people down the hill, then latch onto someone and take him with them all the way down to the gate.

Hit southback around 2, hiked to the top of the king. Was a madhouse conga line of a lot of people who had no business being on southback, let alone at the top of the king. dropped off the back and skied the beach. Solid solid runs back there. Launched out between a few trees ~15-20 ft into what felt like shoulder deep blower. ‘Twas a day to remember for sure. End of the day it definitely was warming up and snow was getting heavier but still rippin.

Encore performance at Seattle's most Ikonic. 9" everything reset, lines markedly subdued with ski-on service by 1:30ish. I usually make the rounds on any given day, but today just farmed the same nearly untouched stretch of glory off 6 until my legs just couldn't take any more. Easily into my top 5 days at that mountain.

I can concur that x and penny dawg delivered the goods yesterday. Got 3 fast laps in right after the first gate opened. Then the lift line got fucked and we went and skied left and right angle trees which was also pretty good. Congo line traversing was in full fuck fest mode. Snowboarders dog crawling in the traverse, people taking off their skis, and folks just stopping. Not sure how to how to educate them on the etiquette of how not the be a fuck stain.

The best is when all of the above happens then you get to the road at 12:30 and all the sheep carriers are on lunch break till 1pm. Then you get the full crystallized experience!

Skied today (Monday) at Xtal. Raining at the base when we arrived at 8:30 and Rex was on wind hold which worked well for us as ton of people bailed and we moved up, waited about 10 mins and then it opened. Gondola and Northway never opened. GV was nice, deep and soft, at least 8" of new. Upper mountain was the place to be as snow turned to snot right around the base of Rex. Chair 6 was crazy good, spent most of the day lapping hamburger, it was good all day and while the line looked long, it moved fast. Very few sharks on the traverse up top. FQ was just hard, hard pack and not enjoyable.

Is parking ever a problem at Mt Baker? Thinking of arriving at 10:30 or so this Saturday with the kids and plan to park at White Salmon lodge. I know that's a terrible idea for Stevens.

Your plan is a non-starter. Parking was completely off the chain, with more ski crowds and more " winter recreation" hoards than I can remember in the last 15 years. Shoot for 9 at the latest.

There’s no winning. I had numerous people just stop in the middle of traverses in front of me right before uphills and stuff. I very nicely asked one woman who stopped abruptly in front of me to move and said it’s really poor etiquette to stop in the middle of a traverse (with a dozen people in line behind your slow ass). She screamed at me like I was a jackass even though I was really polite about it. “LIKE AM I RUINING YOUR DAY, BRO?? Fuck off”.

    Cool. Thanks.
Next time my buddy on a board got cut off he just screamed Gtfo at the guy who got scared shitless.
Way too many idiots going where they shouldn’t recently.
I just go around em now if I can.

I typically give the ol' deadpanned "Thats a bad place to stop" to folks stopped in bad places as i ski by. A lot of folks legitimately don't realize they are blocking a traverse/sidehit/chokepoint/etc because they lack the experience of being blocked themselves. All you can do is just calmly let them know, or ask them to move to a safer spot... and try to chill out and realize its not worth getting in a confrontation over.

That said, an on-mountain version of Terry Tate Office Linebacker would truly be a great addition to any mountain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tooY9nLezL0

Yep, this is the best way to go.

Sounds like some awesome conditions up there. I miss Southback and King laps.

Yep 100% agree. No point in confrontation. Just shitty to get yelled at when you try to be polite.

Stoked for more incoming snow. Anyone getting up today or tomorrow? Conditions look to be great still, minus the high avy danger...

Isn’t avoiding people that suck part of resort skiing?

    It sucks but that’s life

I'd love to body someone off a traverse, but this is a polite society and we don't do that.

I regularly remind people they only hit rocks on chair 6 because they turn to much though.

Great last two days, today likely would have been the day though.

Future PNW resident here, am I safe to assume Baker on Pres. Day weekend will be super busy? I figure no chance for any Ikon or Epic hills that weekend.

Coming up to do some recon for an upcoming job relocation and wondering if it’s worth it to pack the gear. Unfortunately planning around holiday weekends as the Mrs. is a teacher.

Unless the snow is terrible, it will be slammed. Get there before 9 if you want a parking spot.

    Where are you coming from?

If you tour, and the weather is good, a tour out of Paradise on Mt Rainier would be pretty cool for some outtatowners. Super simple and straight forward if not a little crowded probably.

Reservation slots are constantly opening up and being filled at Crystal so keep checking in with them... though expect it to be absolutely slammed that weekend.

So far I don't think there has been a day at xtal you can't get an ikon reservation morning of/night before. Either they open up or xtal releases more slots. I got a last minute reservation for Sunday and it was a holiday weekend 20in day everyone saw coming.

Dealing with the drive and crowds on Pres day weeked will likely give you a pretty good idea of the overpopulated fuckshow this place has turned into.

From Denver area moving to the Seattle area. I thought Baker so my wife could see a bit more of the state. Figured it was like anywhere.

We could bring the touring setups - I had skinning up to Muir on the list for when we move in June but I wouldn’t mind playing around lower if all the resorts are a madhouse.

Hit some laps on Mazama Ridge out of Paradise rather than slog all the way to Muir, it’s good stuff
