Just got back from xtal and it seemed notably less crowded than Thursday with fewer and shorter lift lines. Mask enforcement was much better and it seemed to be working with far fewer “maskless wonders” about. So maybe there is a little hope! Skiing was decent with a bit of new snow and mostly cool/dry weather bookended by fog in the early morning and late afternoon with some squalls after 12:30 or so.

Some didn't have masks. More tried it and I stopped that shit. Pretty soon, the entire line was just a mass of tightly compacted people. Lifties did nothing to control it and I ended up confronting a weenie that thought he was above mask wearing. Obvious to the employee's but they totally lost control of things. A picture of what went on there in the wrong hands would get C.M. a warning as a minimum. If it continues, a shutdown wouldn't be out of the question. Who ever is in charge better get their shit together. Once we got to skiing had 4 nice G.V. runs with no crowd / lift lines and went out the gates to the goods. Surprisingly decent skiing and weather was cooperative. Added: One never wants to be the "COVID" or line control cop but this was the riskiest exposure scenario I've been in since covid protocols came to be. Thanks Crystal!!
Do people put their skis in line as if they are really there but then go back to their vehicles? And the lifties don’t honor that contract?

I always thought that process was bullshit if you ask me. It’s the same as when your staying at a hotel and go down to the pool at 6am and put towels on the beach chairs expecting for them to be reserved until you waddle down at 10am.

    Flame away.

I think it varies place to place. Seen it at Steven’s and Crystal. Generally on weekends.

Extra 10 minutes of snoozing this morning cost me a 40min blvd crawl. After that the rocks at the top of six were easily avoided but seemed to be enough to keep the lift empty for most of the day.

Southback laps were top notch today. Got first chair on 6. Didn't stop lapping 6 until 2pm. Great day.

No, you are standing 6 to 8 feet away giving distance. It has worked like this at Crystal since anyone can remember. Never seen anyone push ahead either. This was more akin to a flashmob hitting a store fyi. Word is they will manage early line conduct with people in place, from a source who knows.

If you’re talking about the clowns at Mission, that shit needs to stop. Those old fuckers don’t get special privileges just by dint of being old.

Bunch of old dweebs wanting first chairs so they can have fresh corduroy

Really it doesn’t matter to me because I’m not skiing where they are but their sense of entitlement is bullshit.

    QFT

I recall one time a few seasons ago we moved their shit because they put it down before grooming got in there to clean up the load area. Their entitled response when they found it in the rack was hilarious.

It was fun to ski chair 3 today. Found fewer rocks on wawa today than I did first day last season.

At first I thought that was what L8 meant but with a gondola it might be different. Btw it is even worse at Alta iirc.

Maybe if you had pulled teeth for a living you could be right there with them

I’m usually there about half an hour before the lifts spin, these old farts show up at 0730 and throw their skis down. Then they go change, put their boots on, drink coffee and shoot the shit for an hour and a half. I’m not against having fun or being excited to ski for a powder day but these will do this on a day where it hasn’t snowed in weeks, it just rained and it 20f. All to be first in line.

    It’s actually comical.

A group of teenagers bumrushed chinook express yesterday at opening bell. They waited at the patrol entrance to the maze then swooped in when they opened the chair. One lift op caught 1 kid but the rest loaded the chair before anyone could do anything... it was kinda comical

At our resort, if you leave your skis early to save a space, you'll often find one of your skis in the river when you return (at least at Warm springs)...

What a nice aggro way to start the day. Glad I don't ski at a place where folks show up self-righteous and angry to a powday morning.

The (much) bigger issue is how many people jammed into the que creating a liability, made worse by line cutters. A few folks were passing ski's / poles over the metal fence to friends, then waltzing through a densely packed line. Maybe that's okay to some folks here? Think some have concluded it's an "entitlement" bitch and moan. The "entitled" in this instance were the young riders who didn't give a shit about respecting a line and going maskless. There (by now) is a person assigned to greet customers and manage the growing line which on a powder day starts early. Don't take my word for it, I'm quoting the director of ski operations.

Witnessed this on a pow day when some rich, entitled father tried to cut in after showing up late. His kids didn't ask if it was okay, and the aggro local bro-brah types weren't having it. Turned it to quite the shit show as the more chill locals tried to calm things down. Guy ended up on my gondi and then proceeded to denigrate me and another young local I had been chatting with in line. No idea why he took out his pissy mood on me and the other dude. We had not said word one the whole time the shitstain was bitching at everyone about how he should be able to cut in line to ski with his family. His daughter finally told him to shut the fuck up and count his lucky starts that someone didn't throw his ass out of line. Taking the phrase "no friends on a powder day" to a whole other level.

That sucks. I need to get better about not letting people ruin a ski day for me, but man, it really sucks when people bring their hyper competitive, aggro vibe. I feel like its gotten a lot worse the last couple years, but maybe im just noticing it more. The drive to Crystal a couple times this week was filled with aggro drivers and dangerous passes... glad that is not my normal drive to go ski.

As for morning lineups... every ski area has a different accepted normal. Some areas its cool to drop your skis in line and go take a piss in the lodge, and at others you are expected to stay with your skis. Unless you are a regular in those lineups you dont know the accepted normal, and thus do not get to enforce anything. get in the back of the line and smile. The LAST thing i would ever do at a ski area where i am not a local is pickup someones skis and chuck them for not following another mountains code (had that happen to me last year). Even as a local, i would just move their skis/poles to the next position in line if there was no place saving- no need to be an aggro asshole. The second to last thing i would ever do is cut in line on a powday... or really any day. Its just a dick move if it forces others back in line.

When in doubt, just err on the side of polite societal norms- don't cut in line, stay with your skis, say please and thank you, etc. Fuck.

The few times I've seen skis in the river, it was locals who knew better, but continued leaving their skis in line after being warned. Going in to pee is cool- there's probably 2 or 3 others to watch your place in line. Sitting in the lodge until the last minute and expecting 1st chair is not cool...

what's the problem with leaving your skis in line? as long as your back in time what difference does it make. with the forecast changing for the worst i'm really wishing I skied yesterday.
