    for real

fewer platitudes but unlistenable as always. i wish they would just get someone with an actual broadcasting pedigree and pair them with one of the more articulate old guard riders who retired in the last few years. Tabke and Barkered jump to mind. until then i'll continue to mute after the first few runs.

I don't mind the announcers, but I also feel like they don't bring much to the table. They don't offer up much information that isn't plainly obvious. There's a fair amount of empty space between riders, and it doesn't seem like they're doing much to fill it with interesting information.

APol was great as a guest commentator last year. Was hoping he’d take the reins this year.

It's a hard job. Even a lot of the pros who do it for major pro sports kind of suck at it, and they have a team of people feeding them stats and things to talk about.

I still think both announcers were better than Tom Brady this season.

Haha was definitely thinking Tom Brady when I read DTMs post.

I think The commentators are fine just don’t try playing a drinking game of like taking a shot or something every time they say ‘making quick work of this …”

You could criticize him for choosing a line that forced him to be on his heels so much, but it seemed like so much of the scoring potential forced you to the skier's left side. It's not aesthetically pleasing to watch, but I don't think it's fair to give the goofy footers such a big advantage by docking him a lot of points for that.
Fuck yeah, another snowboarder in here.

I didn't like Victor's run, and I usually do. But he just went air- heelslide-air-heelslide. It was an impressive high-speed heelslide, but link some turns. Other riders did.

I thought Ross Tester deserved the win. Marcus Goguen skis like an apex predator on the hunt, it's awesome

Whoa what a comp! Super impressive lines thrown down by the ski men’s division as well as some super gnarly crashes. Still can’t believe how much air and how far down the hill Pieffer went on that high side, launch!

Great comp. Just once, just once, I’d like to see the ski men actually go first. Seems like it never happens.

It’s funny you say that. Last spring in Haines Victor was telling me how bummed he often is due to marginal conditions. He was very explicit that the skiers can make the those conditions look so much better and that conditions have to be substantially better for the boarders to go full throttle. He’s a super chill guy and I’m definitely always pulling for him.

Great comp, I like that new venue a lot, hopefully they keep. Way better than the other Baquerilla venue to me. If they had better conditions it would be awesome.

Seemed like Victor didn't make a single turn on the whole upper part of the venue. Disappointing to see.

Peiffer's wreck, holy shit. I think got 60 feet of air off catching that edge!
There's nothing better than sliding down snow, flying through the air

Fair point. I don't snowboard, but my wife does, so I get the heelside issue. So I rewatched Victor and Enzo's run. Enzo wasn't riding goofy, he took that traverse heelside as well. Victor took 10 straight airs (counted every air, even the little hops), 2 360s and 1 Backy.
Enzo had 7 straight airs, 4 360s and also 1 backy. Biggest difference in lines was Victor headed onto of the last rock band riders left, but just did one little hop straight air into the run in to the backflip windlip. Enzo went underneath the rock band. But he had a massive 360 out the gate over the steepest part of the venue.
My first post was gut reaction immediately while watching live, so maybe not the most objective. I like Victor too, don't remember Enzo. This took a lot more of my time than it needed to and I got a little too into the numbers.
TLDR I still think Victor got way overscored and the judges showed favouritism.

I agree on Enzo's bs360 off the top cliff being one of the best tricks of the contest, but the rest of the run didn't do much for me. All his 360's were small and poor style. Both of them backflipped the windlip at the bottom, but the big difference for me was Enzo's backflip was small and he avoided the cliff after while Victor's backflip was bigger and he went straight into the cliff.

I would kill to be an announcer for these events. I'd spend the majority of travel time interviewing the riders, making individual slides for my iPad about their childhood experiences, and all sorts of stuff to tell the viewers about. There would also be a consistent question like-- What was the scariest, raddest, most-life changing moment of your life? Something deeply profound that all viewers can relate to, not just skiing or riding. I'd dig really deep and build a huge portfolio of interview answers. Kinda like weaving journalism and announcing into one thing.

I know the guys already do this to a great extent, but I still have my own vision of how it'd go down and how I'd fill this role.

    Pertaining to men’s ski:

I thought the venue was limited. The same line was skied over and over. The same airs hit again and again …good starting point for the athletes for the season but from a viewing standpoint it started to get to repetitive….

agreed. and i really didn't like the featureless void between top and bottom zones. but it was a new venue and that was exciting enough.

Anyone got good pics of the val thorens venue? The pics on the fwt site don't really convey much. Looks like the comp is on Sunday.

Proud to be last again this year. Last comp was a great warmup but with so few options lower on the face and the repeats of the same windlip hit over and over it got a little stale by the end. Like toast said not a lot of beta on the venue, but the hype video on YouTube makes it looks like a pretty wide face which hopefully means some variance, but it's also shown in pretty epic conditions which I'm not sure they'll have.
