Best way to fly with a bike

I don't have a padded bike box, but may be able to borrow one. What's the deal? Do you have to have one? What about careful packing in a cardboard bike box? Cheaper to ship it?
    It's idomatic, beatch.

There are a couple similar threads with good information. I'm in a similar dilemma, trying to get my Bullit back to WV for a long weekend. Most likely I'll ship everything but the fork, since that's what I'm most concerned about.

The bike cases that look like a big suitcase work great. The KEY is not NOT tell the ticket agent there's a bike in there. Tell 'em it's anything but a bike and they won't charge you the $50-$100 fee or whatever it is. Do this at CURBSIDE check in!!!!!!!

LIP has the idea. I like telling them it's a convention display. I doubt the ticket checker has the right to check to prove otherwise. Of course security does but they don't care about hosing you for an extra $50.

Anyone have a link to one of the better, hard-shelled, bling $$$ bike cases?

What US airline covers the bike? Everyone I've flown on requires you sign a waiver that any damage isn't their responsibility?

Homeowner's or renter's insurance would cover it.

interesting, let me know what airlines to avoid. i've flown with mostly with british airlines and continental (i think) and have never been asked about a waiver. BA is great, i once flew with a light XC bike in a cardboard box and not a scratch - even on the box.
