More Diesel-gate strategies: Buy a Used, CPO Q5 TDI ?

So, I’ve plowed the threads on strategies and experiences for VW TDIs and Cayenne with CPO and the settlement, but has anyone gone that route with a used Audi Q5, 2015-16? Or have one from the start?

From reading reviews, 80-85% Q5 TDIs are having a good experience post-fix, but a few are having the classic cat and dog Audi symptoms. I’m not a newbie to that, years ago I had one of the last Q7s with the 4.2 gas, used CPO, and went through the carbon issues and a bunch of other cat and dogs. But from what I can tell, many of the 2015 Q5 TDI owners report putting miles on without the Audi horrors.

I found that the CPO covered virtually all of the many Q7 issues I had, but it took forever to get parts or took multiple visits. A friend in the industry told me that, unlike many other CPO programs, the dealers actually make money doing CPO work, don’t know if that’s true, but they didn’t hassle me except we split the de-carbonization, and then I religiously fed it BG44k.

During that saga, I had a Q5 loaner for about a month, liked the ride and I now don’t need something as big as the Q7 (which I bailed on at 100K when CPO ended). I vowed never again Audi, but a diesel with extended warranty looks attractive. Am I crazy?

I don’t know what tranny is in the q5 tdi but the fix in the q7 makes for some annoying shift behavior with holding gears too long during warm up no engine braking and the occasional hesitation to kick down when switching from slowing to accelerating at low speeds. I tend to just manually shift when it annoys me and drive the other car with a proper transmission around town. It also eats more def especially when towing. We don’t put in many miles so no comment on long term reliability yet.
Not sure I would buy one if it wasn’t a tow vehicle or I wanted to mostly run lots of highway as the diesel is slow to warm up and still gets crappy mileage around town.

No experience with the diesels sorry but we have a '13 Q5 gasser that has run like a top and still drives like new with 140K+ on the clock. It's my wife's car but i drove it today for the first time in a while and i was kind of amazed. It's had all scheduled maintenance but nothing more and it's never had a serious problem. Of course it's gonna implode now that i wrote this but what the hell it's been a good run. It's a good car.

Don't they have the same engine CL? And from looking, the Cayenne costs more than the Q5. I never understood the post diesel gate extended warranty. Does it apply to all 2014 & 2015 cars or just certain vin numbers.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Pretty sure it's all. Unlimited bumper to bumper 2 years, and then a whole slew of parts for like 100k. Some of those parts you'd think we're not included, so check with the dealer on any repairs under 100k.

A little TDI warranty info on a 2015:

10 yr./100k from date of in-service, for original purchaser.

-The entire Emissions system, Fuel system, Turbocharger, EGR system, Full Longblock (and HPFP through 120k).

Warranty is explicit that any debate between owner and dealer shall be decided for the owner.
The settlement covered all TDI's except Salvage titled ones.

How lucky do you feel? Having been the lucky recipient of two cars repurchased under lemon laws, I’m firmly in the camp of being the guy who would get the 15% problem car.
I will say not being comparable, I did buy the wife’s 2018 expedition cpo and it came with a better warranty than a new vehicle. Being cpo with Ford esp to 7 year 125k miles probably paid for itself when at 37,000 miles I smashed the driver side power folding running board on a dip driving a farm road. I figured they may not cover, but ford replaces the running boards that would have cost $1500 alone, so these factory cpo warranties can treat you good.
If you Ike the car, make sure rentals are included and go for it,
    Just dump when warranty expires.

I have a 2014 Q5 TDi with 80k on it. S line plus package is the hot shit.

No question I am very satisfied and I bought it used after dieselgate. If you can find one consider it for sure. I went to Texas for mine. A stage 1 tune doesn't do much as the 3.0 is already an amazing motor. The transmission is the 8 speed ZF, bulletproof.

Your percentages are funny. No wonder you like German cars.

Liv2ski yes same motor. I liked the P car feel better but it’s bigger and heavier.
DJs got it.. I’d note my warranty is unlimited miles matching that year and equipment break down.
Simple, interesting that the stage 1 didn’t stand out. Good to know. I was thinking I’d Malone tune after warranty runs out. I love how it tows our 4500 lbs rec trailer around with such vigor. Btw do you plan to go the super long haul with yours?Click image for larger version.

Super long haul? Like will I keep it forever? I kept the last turbo wagon for 10 years and 150k miles and just wanted something different, better mpg, and more gears than a manual 5 SPD. No regrets as I just don't see anything now or on the horizon that can do what the Q5 TDi can do which for me is to be able to put my motorcycle on a hitch tray and haul ass to the trailhead and the adjustable suspension is barely affected by the 270lb weight. A X5, Ecoboost Explorer, Cayenne, etc could do it but I like the smaller package of the Q5. It is a remarkable little SUV.

Those 8spd ZF units are pretty amazing. Big spread of vehicles they're in

I totally see the appeal. Yours must zip around good with that torque. We have discussed keeping the CD for a real long time, it’s perfect for us. It’s possible we’ll need a truck bed down the line. Had originally thought sell this for that when time but that feeling is changing. Thinking would rather have a cheaper truck paired with the Cayenne.
We took a trip this summer mostly on the highway and got 773 miles out of a tank [26 gal] and never filled up over the 6 days. I wasn’t driving conservative either. If we paired the CD with an EV we’d be set. Etron?

Anybody want my 2015 q5 tdi premium plus with 64,000 miles? It drives like a new car. Couple paint nicks here and there but very clean overall. Will need a new set of tires sometime soon. The service history was given to me by the previous owner. (60 year old woman from Sun Valley) It had the diesel gate fix done in 2018 with warranty through mid 2024. Audi crossbars and tow package. I love this car, I just need something with a bit more clearance for spring skiing adventures around the desert. Shoot me a text at (208) 241-9035 if you’re interested. I paid $21k for it back on August 1, 2023. Located in Pocatello, Idaho.

I literally just woke up. My question is how long have I slept? You bought this back in August 2024?

My wife has that exact car in brown.
It’s unstoppable in snow with some studded Hakka9’s.

It’s pretty dam fast now, but I’m going to rechip it after the extended warranty expires.
