I'm a cheap bastard and own neither. But I want both.
Which comes first, and why?

Digicam. You can't bring us stoke with an iPod.
Plus, why an iPod? I don't have several gigs of music, and I certainly won't be able to listen to 80 gigs of Rammstein in one sitting. It's just overkill, though trendy.
Get the camera. I like to say my Canon's the best $500 I've ever spent.
Get a digi cam. More usefeul than being able to carry 80 Gigs of music around when a cheap player with 1 Gig of flash ram could last you more than a day.
I have both a 40 gig Ipod and just got a new Canon sd500.
I love them both......but I would rather have the Canon.
I would agree with sphinx that the money spent on the canon was worth every penny.
Ipods are sick. Mine allows me to have about 70 gigs of music, too, 38 on the ipod and 32 on my comp. but, like was said above, 38 gigs of music isn't extremely practical to have on you. But I don't feel that the Ipod is worth as much as they cost. For the price of a ipod you can get a very sick digital camera.
digital camera are so much more useful. You'll use it a ton when you get it.
I like the idea of getting a digital camera and a smaller MP3 player, though.
I have both and get more use out of the Ipod. Cameras can be had pretty cheap. Like Lurch said, there are some super cheap smaller mp3 players. You could get a used digi and an ipod shuffle for about $200 I'm guessing.
Get an iPod Shuffle ($99), which is great for mixes, and get a slightly cheaper Digi cam. Best of both worlds. I really love the iPod shuffle.
I'll toss in some support for the Digi
the ipod is almost impractical beyond road trips and riding the train while sipping your latte and pretending you aren't gay. Big and bulky to run or lift with. Can't use controls with gloves on. Skips when bounced etc etc.
If you want an mp3 player look at iriver(flash based), i've had good times with mine (although my last one didn't float very well...) much cheaper and useful for someone active.
You will spend your money how you want anyway, so why you asking us?? Hmmmmm??
SD500 is a nice camera.

Digicam.

I woulda voted digicam until I bought a 60Gb iPod photo. It's become a constant companion. I use it as a PDA (calendar, email and address book sync), News and Weather reader, photo viewer, music storage and hard drive backup. I even use it to do PowerPoint presentations. Podcasts are an interesting new addition but I haven't found any that are a satellite radio killer yet.
If you're looking at any other sized iPod, I vote digicam.
how bout an good to excelnt SLR film cam?
Its not that I suck at spelling, its that I just don't care
you had to have known that "excelnt" can't look right. c'mon now...
