Funny anecdote about downstaters. In another life I was standing on Kingsbridge, not too far off Jerome in the Bronx. Somebody asked me where VT was when I said that's where I was from, and if it was somewhere upstate. They were trying to place what they saw as my peculiar accent. "Why do you tawk weird?". I had no idea what upstate was at the time, being a long haired kid from VT. I said it was probably past upstate. All this to illustrate the earlier point that in the mind of someone from downstate (NYC or LI) there's "not upstate" and there's "upstate". No middle ground. It's binary.

I was in a hot tub near Jay Peak, there were a couple Canadian kids and their hot mom in the tub too. They said “you guys talk funny, you say hackey, not hawkey (hockey)”

I don’t have to answer that. Reminds of one of my buddies being asked by a “merchant” if he was wearing a bullet proof vest once not far from the spot you’re describing though. He was just overweight but we all got a kick out the question

If you're a cop you have to tell us, man.

I was working shuffle crew for an outfit that sold Christmas trees. They had a location on the sidewalk alongside the armory. I delivered trees and equipment there a lot, usually in the daytime because traffic across E. Gun Hill wasn't as bad as driving into Harlem and Manhattan, which we saved for midnight so we could use the highways.

One night I had to fill in at said location as night watchman for the normal person. That sucked. Got in a situation that was headed towards me being stabbed and or shot. Fortunately it got defused.

A few years later I was headed to Nassau Coliseum from VT to see the Grateful Dead and we got a little lost. We ended up at the top of Jerome. My buddies were freaking out. But I instantly knew where we were and said "We want to get to 95, right? I got this. Bang a left up there on W Gun Hill, it turns into E Gun Hill and we'll end up on 95.". They didn't believe me at first. Connecticut boys that thought they were all slick using their parkways to get us lost.

Jerome had some great ‘record stores’, with bullet proof glass, and drawers to put your money into (like a drive thru cashier teller) and get your nickels and dimes.
I got shaken down once by undercover detectives, they were so irritated that I didn’t have any crack vials, they missed the five folded bindles of powder in my shirt pocket.
My hot 15 year old crush had a shotgun put in her mouth to scare her once, it worked. We didn’t go back down there again for a year or so.

Pelham Bay generates it's own freaking weather. The Christmas tree operation had its main location and yard operations in what was then the rough space between the Bayview Plaza parking lot and the I-95 access road. I spent way too many nights unloading a tractor trailer load of Christmas trees facing sideways sleet and freezing rain coming in off that damn bay. As the junior man, I always had to climb on top of every rig.

I was hoping there was a trail down to the river below the falls

We were in the Pelham in Westchester, and that would have been Pelham Bay. Had a friend that grew up there, his dad was in the ‘Sausage Manufacture And Distribution Business.’
A lot of weird shit went down in his house. We never, ever asked too many questions.
