As good of a thread as any...School me on Tarrytown / Sleepy Hollow.
A home run career opportunity has come up, and we've got to consider it.
    And yeah, it's definitively Downstate.

^^That zone is alright, great history, good eats, a great live music theater and lively downtown areas but it's somewhat congested and a little pricey. It's probably one of the most expensive areas to buy a home but a reasonable commute gets you to places (slightly) more reasonable.

Yeah, good summary. Look at real estate prices and property taxes and consider that when making your decision. Cost of living differential down here is bad enough to make a really good opportunity into a net net loss. People making incomes that would be really comfortable big house territory other places are paycheck to paycheck around here.

Thanks mags - the sticker shock is real. We'll see if it's worth it in the coming weeks.

I don’t think that’s the first such story out of Syracuse this year either. What the hell is going on up there?

It really depends on where you’re coming from. As gl said, good area, but how does it compare to your current situation? Closer/further to skiing/family/etc?

Denver - we've been here for 12 years, doing the Standard Coloradotm thing, but have been open to change recently.

There is no A-Basin, or Eagles Nest Wilderness, in Downstate NY, so we know expectations would change, as would the need for new interests. Family is in Buffalo NY, so now it's drivable, but I'm not sure that's a benefit?

On the surface, I don't love it, but in keeping an open mind, would love to know how the area shines.

Oof. That’s a big move. I’m assuming (based on family in Buffalo) that you’re from the EC originally. If either of you are not, that’s even a bigger oof.

Erie County, Part II, doesn't sound ideal.

That neighborhood has been bad for 40 years or more. Drove through there every day in the 80’s

You will be posting more in the fishing, sailing and hunting threads, so there's that.

I'm guessing it would be a financial trap.

RIP. What the hell is the Lockport Cave Tour? Is that where they have the Pirates of the Chicken Wing ride?

    Lol

I dunno, lower Westchester isn't bad and if you can afford to be within sight distance of the river and a walkable village it could be pretty cool for a while. I couldn't get emotionally attached to it though, the congestion and all that comes with being one of the original suburban areas in the country is just too much for me.

Things get considerably less congested if you go upstream a bit. A former coworker has a nice place near Cold Spring. There's a commuter train line from that area north to Tarrytown. I wouldn't want to do the trip to NYC each day on that train but Tarrytown is very doable.

Trying to think of the positives of Lower Westchester, having lived in a similar community on the east side of the county, but they're just not coming to me.

Golf kind of saved me there at the end, Westchester has golf in spades, but it's restricted by money, who you know, and now the years long wait list.

The beach and the "Shore", while they are great beaches you won't get there quickly and it doesn't offer any solitude.

Offshore fishing is great, but money and access are a big part of that.

Nearshore and freshwater fishing is abundant, access is an issue especially to the Hudson. Public land and public boat ramps are rare downstate.

The "city" yeah it's an amazing place w virtually endless "culture." I do miss the food although I was never one to jump in the car to ride to Flushing for Chinese food.

Are you referring to I-70 on a powder day or the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge?

Is this frankentreat doughnut dough in the shape of a muffin, or muffin dough in the shape of a doughnut?

It's kinda like a big Timbit, if Timmies decided to stuff em full of cocaine and slap a $20 label on the box.
