I still call it The Jake.
Probably a bit better than Lake Erie or Lake Ontario but still not quite ready for swimming unless you are some sort of Tri Athlete or someone with a wet suit. Even many back yard swimming pools unless they really crank up their heaters high are still waiting for the water to warm up a bit more.
Questions for M2711C (or anther expert on NYS’s canal system if there happens to be one around): How long should I budget for getting in and out of a lock on a typical summer weekend? Also, will they operate it for just a couple people in a kayak(s)? Also, am I better off trying to communicate with the lock operators via a VHF radio or a cell phone or some other means? I’m thinking about starting with a simple Champlain Canal paddle - like maybe from Whitehall to Fort Edward.
No string to deal with on mine. It's a cartridge so when it runs out I put a new one on. That's it. The thing weighs like 8 pounds with the battery so I stick an extra in my back pocket and get a half hour or so run time. About the time I run out of battery I need another beer and puff so it's perfect.
Fucking awesome! I lol'd and the dog sensed how much I enjoyed it and she rolled over to kiss me. Thanx.
Drink 2 beers then go in...
no races for me tonight... they gonna lift that broken bridge in phoenix for the first time in a week n a half tomorrow at 0700 in the am and they gonna leave it up till 1800 in the pm. got me scheduled for 15 hours of overtime to deal with the expected armada.
we got big assed boats backed up all the way past sylvan beach to rome. this is gonna be a major cluster fuck of rich clueless bastards who think they can "yacht" with the best of 'em vs the paid boat jockeys moving boats for even richer fuckers that couldn't be bothered to drive their own 75 foot floating mansion from saint john's to chicago for the fucking summer.
let the games begin!

yes, kayaks are boats. wear your jackets buckled and hold on to the lock ropes.
first ya gotta find the dude operating. channel 13 or phone when you are 10 minutes out, which, in a kayak is pretty damn close. the ride itself takes about 10 minutes up or down. then ya gotta add on the time for them to get it either empty of full for ya. so, up to 10 more minutes. plus time waiting for any other boats besides youse guys to pass which just prolongs the whole operations.
oh and, M2711C is my fathers name... you can just call me m2711c.
fact.
That was beautiful man. Good luck with the gong show tomorrow.
Loved watching the great yacht migration north to the Great Lakes every spring through my vantage point on Kentucky Lake. Almost as comical as dayboat renters on the ICW without water or a tide table waiting on Sea Tow, just with bigger toys.
I still call it The Jake.
State fair people![]()

How's the gong show going?

fact.
That was fine television programming.
That’s pretty cool. There’s actually a FB group down by me that is dedicated to helping Snapping Turtles back and forth across some local roads where they often get run over on their way to lay eggs. Saw these guys on my paddle today. Just barely upstate by my standards
you might have to zoom a little to see the turtles.
