There was a guy ten years ago working for IBM in Burlington that could control his entire operation from his desk. He would leave work and walk into to his sugarhouse ready to press the on button.

A lot of guys are using vacuum monitors that feed cell signal to report leaks in the woods. It makes it a lot faster to increase production.

The slow drip off the fatback kept the syrup in the finishing pan from boiling over. The other old sugar makers trick was to dip a finger into a cup of cream and flick it on the roiling bubbles. The fat breaks the surface tension. Most guys use some veg oil in a dropper these days.

What the hell is going here? How many upstaters have ever been inside a maple shack? I mean, sure, some have but most of us grew up in shitty rust belt row houses and 60s era suburban ranches. Maple syrup comes in a plastic squeeze bottle. On a positive note, there was a wave of new maple syrup flavored liquor products a few years ago. Mostly introductory close out material but I might still have a sample bottle of Mama Walkers Maple bacon flavored schnapps out in the garage if that helps.

There's still an unanswered request for someone to tick Swain off the list this year. So let's sweeten the deal before the snow is gone ... if you go, you're a stone's throw from Cartwrights Maple Tree Inn. All you can f'n eat buckwheat pancakes. I still remember the year me and two buddies did the round-trip from ROC on bikes. Arrived at Cartwrights at the halfway point and proceeded to double our weight before turning back around.

Growing up in WNY we had corn and forest behind our house. One year when I was still young we decided we were going to make our own maple syrup. So late summer of that year we walked into the woods with our can of spray paint to tag the trees we would tap the following spring. The corn in the field next to the woods was high which made it tempting to be distracted by our favorate game of "Corn Grenade®." But we had a job to do damnit. As we walked up to the first tree someone clearly stepped on a nest of ground wasps because the next thing you know we're all booking it out of the woods and into the corn field where we proceeded to strip as those little fuckers stung the shit out of us. I still have a scar over one eye from a sting. In fact, it's how I got my nickname, "one eye" (OK, that's a lie). In any case, we decided to wait for the cold to kill those fuckers dead before going back out with our trusty hammer, spouts and buckets that spring. Lasted about a year before we decided it was a total pain in the ass. Plus boiling sap on the stove in the kitchen makes the house smell kinda shitty.

I went to high school in Stowe, and my twin sister had a full ride scholarship as a hockey goalie for UVM...FWIW. I would still never rock a ‘native’ sticker or anything...

I think we’re getting ECRC and upstate threads crisscrossed here. Everyone is welcome in the upstate, especially if you’re willing to help figure out where it is.

“Corn grenades” heh heh. My HS had a bunch of crab apple trees growing on it. In my memory those years seem like one long continuous crab apple fight.

I’ve been told by many a woodchuck that it’s 6 generations, born and raised, to be a “true Vermonter”.

Not a native. Born here. Raised here. Went to school here (JSC and UVM). Work here. Now live a mile from where I was born purely by accident. 51.5 years in VT so far.

While my parents didn't sugar, tapping trees and humping buckets was part of every spring as a kid.

Ooh, I almost forgot, I got kicked out of Castleton State within a semester!
    That shit isn’t easy!
The story is pretty Vermont, I accidentally took to much acid at a Max Creek show on the commons, and went out late at night and did a bunch of stupid graffiti...

I also bought my first snowboard from Jake Carpenter out of his garage/workshop in 1982...$45, I still have it.
My sister was really good friends with Monica Dostel from the way back Magic days (where I first learned to ski). She’s also still good friends with John Fishman, who I met a bunch at my parent’s house in Syracuse. Ahhh...memories...

However, I never dated Grace Potter, shame about that.
But I did get naked with a girl that kinda looked like her at the quarry in Dorset.
    So there’s that.

First ride on a barely upstate bike trail just finished between Brewster and Hopewell Junction today. You can now bike from Manhattan to New Paltz with a few difficult breaks on a protected bike trail. Supposedly all the way to Buffalo, but, not me. https://empiretrail.ny.gov

    Huh - that’s pretty cool.

    Begs the question though;
How far up that thing would I have to go to get some uc? Or genny black label or whatever that nightshade is, nifty how it just closed out the sun.

Nice. Have you ridden the TZB bike path, Benny? When I went it was kind of a shit show but I’ve heard it’s nice midweek during the day when the crowds are less.

Not yet. Kinda sucky on the Westchester side, but, pretty easy to start there, get through Nyack, and south to Manhattan. Classic NYC resident ride. Now it's two bridges.
