Did anyone here ever get to ski the area that used to be in Fahnestock State Park before it closed in 1984/85 season? I used to see it when I'd go through on my way to and from college but when I finally had skis in the car and time to take advantage of it in March 85 it was closed and never reopened. There were two other great little areas in that zone that also closed around the same time. Both were sight distance off 84, one in E Fishkill on Rt 52 and the other was on Mt Beacon.
Isn't Mt Beacon a large pile of large jagged rocks that would need like 10 feet of snow to cover? That was what I remember from driving past it on the road to it's west.

Weird seeing Morning Star without terrain park features.

They ever open that run between Comet and Rocket? I see it disappeared from the trail map.

The lift served ski area parking lot is just north of the RT 301 exit on the northbound side. When it closed they closed the lot to the public but they still use the lodge for equipment storage. I think the vert was about 200 feet but don't remember for sure.

The ski area is still very visible as you go by on 84. Look above the jail and you'll see the cog railway cut then the trail layout starts to become obvious but it's pretty well grown in. A few minutes east as you go up the hill past the Taconic exit as you go over a really short bridge you can see Mt Storm on the right. The property owner keeps the trails mowed and the t-bar is still standing. They closed when the owners drug addled, drunkard son burned the second floor of the lodge to a crisp while he was in it. It's the best snow hole in the entire area.

Terrain park is on shooting star. Ironically, with the nice creamy snow it was a blast digging trenches on Morning Star all day. Brain off, press the heal as hard as you can and lean over. So much fun.

How many runs in the Upstate are named Morning Star?

    And why?

My favorite trail on the 400 vertical feet CNY ski hills is that 50 ft steep section usually named The Plunge or Free Fall that's a double black.

Don’t joke, THE WALL at HV is as extreme as it gets. It even slid a few years back.

Not only that, but who's doing their weather reporting? "Rare severe weather threat in the South"?

It's spring; in the South. Massive thunderstorms and tornadoes are just as common as tulips and peach blossoms.

The "reporter" probably just waived his hand wildly in the general direction of anything above Westchester.

I'm surprised Ellicottville hasn't installed avalanche fencing at the base after that incident. Gonna be a big "I told you so" when the next one happens.

I must have 100 days at Catamount over the last 43 years. It can be a really fun place when the conditions are right but the new trail ruined what was some super fun steep trees when the conditions were right (5 or 6 days a year ). That one and the one to the lookers right can be some icy mothers when conditions are anything less than perfect. I noticed the Thunder Ridge mention, that's my local hill and my old shop was in the building on Rt 22 at the base. There isn't much to it but again, when things are good it's a hoot, and Fools Delight, the upper run under the double and Timber Wolf are legitimately steep and fun. Me and the kid that worked for me used to go up there at night and clear the trees out between Wildcat and Eagles Lair but then there was a big windstorm a few years after that and they used the bottom of that area for a brush dump and killed it.

Nice - it did look like Morningstar was primed for "Mach Looney" speed.
Bristol is a cool hill. Solid vert, fast lifts and a chill scene.

It is but the trail is lined by thick pine trees and really narrow and has no snowmaking so it takes a really good snow year to get snow in there. About 15 years ago a couple of guys on the snowmaking crew used to drag hoses in there and they'd put snow down under the trees and run snowmobiles through to break it up and pack it down so it didn't take much natural to make it good.

I’m not going upstate. The cops are stupid.

Why would they release him the third time?
    Kill all the telemarkers
But they’ll put us in jail if we kill all the telemarkers
