I know I’ve heard the midwestern “ope” in WNY, as in “ope, let me just scootch past you there”, or “ope, would you look at that sky today, first time the suns been out in weeks”, but I wonder if ope is part of the universal Upstate vernacular.

Or are you allowed to use a hard R upstate?
Unless it’s an R on a vowel ending.

That may be the test.

If I can ski hunteR (never been) and eat pizzA and have a sodA, I’m down with that.

I believe that upstaters pronounce the R unless they are mocking downstaters in which case they say Huntah. I’ve never heard that “ope” thing. If it was heard upstate, it’s probably because a Midwesterner was visiting.

Near is always relative. Since The Statue of Liberty is downstate (nobody in this thread can dispute that) then it is close to parts of upstate NY. It is close compared to Europe also of course. Social distancing has changed the rules of being near also...
