Southern chile

Last season we checked out the area around a little lost village called "Ranquil" in the araucanía region of chile, usually when people go skiing there they just get to know the corralco resort and climb the volcanoes (that usually get a ton of wind and sun) but there are plenty of other cool little valleys like ranquil further east that offer a kind of skiing that is pretty rare for south america.

Do you have lenga trees there like down in tierra del fuego/southern argentina? Those things are impenetrable.

yes, the lengas grow in almost all the southern andes

Cool. Definitely different to see spines and pillows in the Andes. We went to Arenales last October and really liked the vibe. Hopefully it doesn't get overrun by snowmobiling bros like everywhere else. They don't respect the signs clearly stating it's *illegal*.

Sleds are a really great tool out there, usually the first 5 hours of approach are on shitty unskiable snow and the last 200 vertical meters are decent skiing so everyone would love to have a snowmobile to get the most out of the days out (i have been skiing human powered only all my life and do not own a sled but getting angry at them is pure jealousy)

I'm not against their use altogether, but there are areas where they should not be allowed. We spoke with some of the people working at Arenales, and it seems like they're trying to put together a really cool touring-only zone in the old ski area there. No approach needed. There are signs saying "no motos". But they are getting poached all the time by people who show up with sleds and brap all over the place. Kind of sad and definitely disrespectful. As it gets more popular, I can see enforcement maybe happening.

not that far south (about an 8 hour drive from santiago).
in chile we call patagonia everything further south than puerto montt (13 hrs drive)
