    camera equipment + planes = ??

so i'm visiting my sister in chicago next week and i'm planning on bringing my film SLR with me. i'm planning on putting it in my carry-on so there's no chance of it being fucked up by the baggage handlers if i were to put it in my checked baggage. is there anything i should be concerned about as far as security goes? the last thing i want happening is them opening it up (and there is film in there...) and tearing it apart trying to see if i'm gonna blow up the plane, then leaving me with $300 worth of plastic and metal parts. i'm also kind of concerned about my ipod as well... any advise?

Take your camera out of your carry on and ask for a hand inspection, you'll get to watch everything they do. Try to finish that roll in the camera before you get on the plane both ways.

Don't let any high speed or slide film get x-rayed. They might give you a hard time about inspecting film so just be nice and wait for the check.

If you know your history, then you would know where you coming from, then you wouldn't have to ask me, who the heck do I think I am.

If you've got any 800ASA film or above, pull it out of the bag and ask for a hand inspection.
If the camera is loaded with 800, also ask for them to hand inspect as that sensitive a film can fog.

100/200/400 film should be fine as long as you're not taking it thru more than twice.

Everything else will pass thru the x-ray just fine.

(And you're right, never check a camera or other senistive gear. They really do toss the bags around like a bunch of gorrillas.)
Good runs when you get them.

I had heard the no xray for film bit but pretty sure I never had a problem. The two above seem to explain both scenarioes that worked for me. trayc is certainly in a better position than I to know and TomK's advice seems reasonable.

If you put your bag w/camera through the machine if they have a problem they'll ask you to inspect it. Hand inspections a pain and probably more likely to get things screwed up. The only thing to worry about is the film, and fast film is the only film to really worry about. Don't put any film in your checked bags, they nuke that stuff with radiation now too.
