Thumbs down Performance Bike Sucks Ass

So I ordered a new roadie from Performance Bike( ) on Sunday(I don't have an LBS or a budget that would allow me to buy a bike from one even if I did), and it arrived yesterday. Great deal, 25% off already, with an addition 20% coupon code, full Ultegra 10 bike for $860. Well, I open it up and lo and behold, the "54cm" bike I ordered is actually a 48cm frame. And to top it off, the box it was shipped in is marked as a 50cm frame size. After a few phone calls, they say they can sort it out, but it will take at least 2 weeks. We call again to see if we can expedite it somehow to find out that they are out of stock of the 54cm bikes and won't be getting any more in for quite some time. What irks me most is that the invoice, order confirmation, etc. all said it was a 54cm bike, their line was that the UPC's on the 48cm and 54cm ike boxes were switched somehow...

Basically, Performance Bike has lost all business from me in the future, their half-assed service and attention to detail has cost them hundreds if not thousands in sales(again, because I don't have an LBS). Just a warning to maggots thinking of buying from them, this is a firsthand accountant, and I've heard of other cases just like it through Performance, so be aware. So the search begins anew, son of a bitch.

nashbar has been worse to me. with a warehouse in Ohio, you'd think they could get a package here faster than 10 days.

    And yes, performance sucks.

I bought a Performance brand MTB tire from them years ago, trail rode on it once and the thing was falling apart. I took it back to the shop three days after I bought it and they balked at replacing it, even though I was willing to pay the difference to upgrade to a Specialized tread. Way to back up your stuff.
They closed their retail shop in Boulder a few years ago. If a "discount" bike shop can't survive in Boulder, you know there has to be a problem with the product.

They are the same "company" but pricing, service and selection aren't the same between the 3. Performance rocks when they staff is too incompetant to price things correctly. Ultegra for Sora prices

Actually, they just moved to a different location within the same strip mall. As much as I dislike Performance, it's the best place to go in Boulder for parts. (It's really fun to call Excel looking for parts ) Apparently I'm the only person in Boulder to own a bike long enough to replace parts.

Did not know that! I assume that was some sort of consolidation after each was created. The other thing is even if they have the same parent company which I assume is what you mean they may corporately run totally independant operations.

Makes it hard to get pissed off at one and go to the competitor which of course is the point.

From what I can tell and have heard a little of, at the retail stores, things are still kept pretty separate. The local Supergo has much better techs and sales staff than the local Performance IMHO.

However, all the mail order, and phone customer service is handled out of NC at Performance's headquarters.

My brother bought a Scattante from Supergo last year right around the time a lot of this shuffling was going on. They shipped his bike without the front quick release skewer, seatpost and seat. When he called Supergo and talked to a Performance CS rep, they told him that they couldn't just send out the missing parts, he would have to send the bike back so they could verify that the parts were missing. Apparently they were protecting themselves from $40 in parts scam.

Anyway, moral of the story is, sure he was pissed to have to wait, but the bike is such a screaming deal, and (as he knows now) rides very nice, so that is something you just have to put up with once in a while when you are paying such a lower cost.
As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way.

Customer service counts. You reinforce that message with where you spend your money.

Agreed phUnk, that was my last purchase from Performance/Nashbar/Supergo, even if it means spending a bit more money. Its frustrating when I've saved up all summer caddying to buy a road bike, only to find the one I wanted initially sold out, then to find another nice one and have that one not work out either. Oh well, hopefully something will work out before ski season rolls around.

I guess it didn't occured to them the same scammer could have just removed the items and then shipped it back. I can see protecting themselves I just don't think they accomplished that. I suppose this would be their only recourse in sending it back to their own supplier though as the mispackaging may have occured there.

Seems the only one who benefited on the approach was the shipper.

It does. That's why I shop at performance, as opposed to my local bikeshop where everytime I go in asking for a 105 part they try to upsell me to DuraAce.

Inconvenience, part of the territory with shopping mailorder/online. Wait until winter, you'll see some lower prices then.

Want to get this settled sooner rather than later? Thought so, repeat after me "I want to talk to your manager" Learn how to play hard ball, don't curse or talk down, but make sure you express how inconvienced this is making you.

Some people may not like this tactic, but it has worked without fail, every time i have had an issue, no matter what type of business. I mail ordered from Supergo 6 weeks ago, no problem, excpet the bottom bracket was not assembled correctly, but the local supergo mechanic hooked it up.
