    Paging camera geeks

Just got a Canon S2 IS - what kind of filter if any should I put on it for general outdoors photography? What about for skiing?

not knocking your choice of camera (i'd go for it if given the chance), but why not spring for a digital rebel? only about 150 more (gotta shop around) and it's compatable with the entire line of EF and EF-S lenses.

but as far as filters go, as hemas said, a skylight is the best choice. on brighter days it'll reduce excess blue giving better color rendition. that and you don't really have to worry about exposure compensation since they only absorb about 1/10 of and f-stop or so.

On a positive note, I did save some money on car insurance by staying with GEICO..."

Already spending more than I really wanted to and getting a camera bigger than I'd like to carry around. But every review rated this one as about the best amongst it's competitors. 12x optical, great IS, good movie mode, fast, like the fact screen reverses on itself for protection etc.

Had to draw the line somewhere there's always nicer gear/gadgets/bikes/cars/hifi for just those few bucks more.

Technically it my wife's birthday gift - we often do gifts to each other that really are for both us. She might have freaked if I went the whole SLR too complex and too many switches route

the Rebel is seriously worth the extra coin, and you just let the wife shoot in auto mode.

    Get a circular polarizer.

I disagree... a UV0 will be just fine without any effect on the color (which the camera auto-white balance will attempt to correct for anyway witha 1A).

You still cut out the UV (although the UV is less of a problem with CCDs).

    Lens protection is good.

Compensation is not an issue with a TTL metering camera.
