Ok since we can all agree the Bountiful B is kind of whack(but I’m going to keep riding it because I like janky bullshit), what other trails should I be checking out that are similarly steep, rowdy, and gnarly? I thoroughly enjoyed Honeycomb Canyon last summer, but it’s gonna be months til that thing is good to go, and it’s a bit of a shlep to get up there even when thawed out. Any other gnarly low hanging fruit I should be looking at?

Parrish Creek when it clears out, bonus points for still having to go up the same endless dirt road you slog for Bountiful B. If it clears out this month and you want to ride it let's make it happen, it's a hilarious pad-burner, almost 4000' to the valley floor. There are a few others in the same area accessed from the same road but I haven't done them yet.

Lots of cool chunky gnar in the upper Cottonwoods and AF but as you said, it's not going to melt until October this year.

Oh yeah I rode Parrish Creek at least 5x last season. One of my all time favorite descents anywhere, so good.

What’s the story with Black Mountain? Was thinking about checking it out in a couple days, or at least seeing how far up I can get from the BST.

I ran out the ridge yesterday, the ridgeline is clear until the base of Black proper, I'd gather you can get a decent ways up the west face, but, there is still some snow up high on the trail.

The BM ridge isn't worth it unless you just want to suffer. It's steep with brutal bits but all rideable between the start of Terror and the start of 70s Bush (which is probably super wet right now, although I haven't checked). I wouldn't bother going above that (6600'), the section to Rook Pt is unrideable, pure sand/gravel for about 1300' in under a mile. I hate it even on foot, and it's shitty riding on the way back down, you're mostly trying not to lose the front while burning through brake pads. Past Rook Pt is "rideable" since it's mostly flat but there's a lot of low-speed chunky tech and it gets brushy.

I pushed the bike all the way up to Little BM last year, mostly cause I'm a glutton for punishment, and it was hateful. Ended up poaching the Smuggler trail into upper CityCreek as my harebrained idea didn't pan out. That was a relatively entertaining bit of trail and I was lucky enough not to run into anyone (it's closed to bike but I don't think it sees much traffic) but I wouldn't recommend it, once you're in City Creek you've got nothing to ride but pavement.
There's some potential for really cool skidders from the top of Rook Pt into the the N Frk of City Creek, they would eventually connect with 70s Bush but would require extensive de-bushing. You can also bump in the S Fork of CityCreek from there, I've done it on foot, there could be a beauty of a trail in there (tentative name: Ron Jeremy's Moustache) but it would take work and piss of some hunters, I've found game cams and shelters in that drainage.

How far past the treatment plant until you hit snow again?

That was right at the end. I made it all the way up, stood the bike in the snow and alwalked the last 50 feet. You can ride across the bridge right near the top. And this was Thursday, it will be a bit more clear today. Go for it! It is my favorite road ride in town.

Has anyone explored Hobble Creek or Diamond Fork yet this year? Route 6 udot cameras look dry until Soldier Summit.

Not this year... If there's no snow on the sat pictures it's time to go, get it before the motos and the cows take it over! Unless you're going on the moto, in which case, well, get it before the cows and the bikers get there!

I'm exploring a whole lot of this lately:



Rode the new N Canyon to Mueller connector tonight, from Wild Rose, it's gravel-bike heaven. So smooth and mellow, yet super fun. No gnar to be seen, barely a rock, but damn is it fun to haul ass on decent flatish dirt without having to push 200W up a near-vertical trail before losing 1000' in a mile.

Bug? None to be found except one insanely dense cluster dropping into Mueller park, no idea why they were all congregated there.

I rode North Canyon and Mueller Connector tonight. As Boissal said, mellow but super fun and in great condition. No bug issues at all. Good early season trail to get back in shape while other stuff melts out.

RE: Hobble Creek - USFS has the road closed just past the frisbee golf and Jolly’s ranch camp area. Road damage and high runoff further up the canyon. Sign showed it closed all the way to Diamond fork. No public access (foot, bike, car, etc).

On a very related note, it turns out you can ride out on a flat with Cushcore.

I used to not really mind but an AQI of 100+ is a hard no go for me anymore. Even 80 has me wheezing and coughing.
