So my two daughters and I flew to Vancouver to visit my wife parents for a week over the holidays.
Flew there on December 23, 2019. While we were being processed through the international terminal we were stacked up in the long switchback ques with what looked like about 300 female Chinese monks. (monk? religious devotee?) They were all shave headed and many wore glasses and matching tan colored tunics. They looked malnourished.

I could see many of them holding passports and I looked close to one and saw they were Chinese. Thought nothing of it beyond the novelty of seeing 300 female monks and having to explain to my 4 year old why they were all dressed the same.

Flew back to U.S. on Dec 30, 2019. A couple weeks later my 10 year old was sick for a week with fever and general bad cold/flu symptoms. Then I had a weird cough for like 10 days then my wife had same weird cough for another 10 days.

Then another week later my 4 year old came down with mild fever and a rash developed. Turns out she had Scarlet fever that turned into strep. Put her on Amoxicillan and the fever and rash was stopped but then turns out she was allergic to amoxicillin and she broke out in nasty full body rash. Googel image search it...

It was a rough month for the family but we all good now. It all went down before corona virus scare hit the media.

So in theory my wife, 10 year old and I could have caught corona and just didn't know it?

Using that theory anyone with a cough or fever could of had coronovirus.

Anyone who played Plague knows what happens when you start getting new cases popping up in multiple places around the globe in short spans. That shit is spreading fast. The number infected goes up exponentially from there unless countries take extreme action of they invent a cure or vaccine. At least in the video game...

just FYI - not all rashes on amoxicillin are due to an allergy to the medication - which can be helpful to know as an allergy to a commonly used antibiotic like that will limit treatment options in the future.

TO be clear - it may have been an allergic reaction - or it may have been a very common reaction between the strep and your kids immune system and the amoxil all combined (my understanding).

Talking to a pediatrician (especially if you have any photos of what the rash looked like) could be helpful since a 4 year old is likely to have more bouts of strep throat, ear infections etc down the road and knowing whether or not she is allergic to amoxicillin will be very helpful to doctors, pharmacists, and to your family's comfort around antibiotics

caveat: this is not my website nor am I a pediatrician:

Also probably 99% not true at this point. Not suggesting anyone there is lying, just with 1.3 billion people, relatively porous borders with both China and countries neighboring Iran, it seems likely to explode there in the future if it isn't already doing so (which also seems likely).

i should add the part about porous borders was based on a quick Google and I can't verify it's the case but I assume it's true, especially in the more northern sectors where cold/flu viruses should be more prevalent anyway, except for less dense populations.

Tapping my foot waiting for the news that it has blown up in Reno.

Lots of Chinese in Nor Cal Lots of them flew to / from China before the news hit and the screening started.
Chinese really like to gamble. They come to Reno and all points along the I 80 in-between

Don't hold your breath. It's coming.

Am I reading correctly that for most its not that bad compared to several other strains of Flu?

just flew milan-nyc on what evidently was one of the last delta flights on that route for a while. had been in cortina for the past week (yikes, they need snow). really not much sign of any coronavirus response at all yesterday at jfk airport, not any extra checks on us arriving from northern italy. i was kind of ready for anything, even some sort of quarantine. there were barely even a few small signs/posters in the customs/immigration area of the airport. when we arrived in italy last week at malpensa, at least the italians were scanning everyone's temperature.

will be working remotely for two weeks to be considerate. my fear is that being in a flying metal cylinder out of italy for about eight hours with a bunch of folks who may or may not have been as careful as we'd been might make me a bit of a concern for others here in the states. crazy stuff!

Stories like this just tell me we are a month away from a pretty severe outbreak in America.
