    skiing at basin today (8-7-2005)

Yesterday while GT and I were hiking around Snowbasin we found a nice sized chunk of snow above Porky that looked like it needed to be skied. We returned with flyk today...

We met in the parking lot a few minutes after 9am, and after a bit of wrangling we were offered a ride up to the top of Porky. It was helpful not to hike down and around from the gondola, and it was very nice of the Snowbasin management to haul us up. After a half hour truck ride, we arrived at the top of Porky, a few minutes walk away from the snow.

flyk started down before I had my camera out, and I almost cut his head off:

We each made at least three trips up, flyk probably did 5 or 6.

    flyk:

and a little hop turn just for kicks:

    GT:

    From below:

And after we were done slaying the low-angle corn:

The walk back along the service road to the gondola wasn't bad:

And a bunch of corvettes were on display at the bottom:

It was interesting to work with a film SLR after using digital pretty much exclusively for the past 4 years. I'm somewhat surprised that the pictures turned out OK, though wal-mart's photoCD service isn't exactly high-end.

Edit: this is my 666th post on TGR...

Nice work. Very cool of the resort to help you guys out. That's the area I skied when I disappeared for awhile over the 4th of July weekend. Hopefully those guys will be cool with us doing other strange things this season.

    Talking

And here I thought I was through with the ski season.

Basin treated us very well. They said "GT, if you'll quit your dang whinning, well give you a ride all the way up the mountain so you wont have to hike."

So the Backpack & Flyk hike up this steep narrow chute to get the first turns.

The view from the top was nice.

    Backpack

Backpack, his skiing pics were much cooler than mine.

This is where Flyk saw the rattle snake.

Flyk finds out he really does like the rails after all. I think Phunk sold him on the idea.

Flyk says he's not getting enough of a workout, so as to keep up his fireman steez. So he asks if he can carry my pack, up the hill. I had to think about it for a couple of nanoseconds, but I said SURE. He ask Backpack too, but Backpack, says no, he's having too much fun sweating.

Just a couple of purdy pics to finish off a very fun morning.

I want a 6" travel 20lb MTB. I found the 20lb MTB, but only good for riders under 87 pounds.

That looks like a lot of fun. Snowbasin is a cool place. I was thinking that I wanted to head back there again in the winter. Now I want to go there in the summer too. Nice pictures.

Name Game: Jazz dancers return from trip to bases

    Saturday, August 13, 2005

    By Chris J. Miller
    Name Game

The Nu Skin Jazz Dancers capped off their tour of U.S. military bases on Thursday night with a big welcome from young fans who gathered at Salt Lake International Airport.

Several youngsters from Salt Lake City's Neighborhood House welcomed the dancers home from a two-week swing to American military bases in places like Singapore, and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.

Making the trip were dancers Ashley Kurtz, Carly Jenkins, Emily Harper, Keri Holland, Lindsey Nichols and Stacey Holland, along with dancer director Jan Whittaker.

The Jazz will hold dancer tryouts today at the Zions Bank Basketball Center. Registration is at 7 a.m.; tryouts begin at 8 a.m. Participants must be 18 or older and be a high school graduate.

    What a season

Snowbasin was properly proud when the Ogden Valley ski resort hosted a race on the Fourth of July.

Well, would you believe they are still skiing at Snowbasin? At least three hearty souls, anyway.

GT40, flykdog and backpack, a trio of avid hikers, skiers and photographers made runs on one of the remaining patches of snow earlier this week.

According to Snowbasin media director Mary Rowland, the trio made 8-9 turns above the Porcupine lift.
